In the summer of ’47, my family moved out of town—if Bear Butt, Montana, could be called a town. Bear Butt had exactly one store, one tavern, one gas station, one school and one church. Our new place sat on the edge of a forest and had about 40 acres of tillable land, a barn, several dilapidated sheds and an old farmhouse that had never seen a coat of paint. The nearest neighbor was two miles away.

The farmhouse was rustic in the extreme. Actually, it was difficult to discern where rustic left off and ramshackle began.
