The Lost Treasure of Captain Smorgan

ear 1692 anno Domini, off the majestic coast of Caribbean Jamaica, and the sun burned the sky a beautiful shade of crimson as it dipped behind the horizon, retiring for yet another day.

Within telescopic range of the city lights, Captain Smorgan’s pirate ship lay moored for the night just west of stately Port Royal. Rowing a skiff through the wash of broken waves, two scraggly pirates from Captain Smorgan’s crew, Scratchy and Brody, bickered back and forth like an old married couple.

But the Cap’n said to have the chest ashore by sundown, Brody! Or we’re not to partake in the festivities!

Scratchy gulped from a bottle of rum.

Ahoy, Scratchy, ye daft sea rat! The good Cap’n also told thee he sweat sea salt into existence!

Scratchy mustered a proud look and shot back.

Now why ye got to go and utter a thing like that about our good Cap’n? Thou knowest as well as I, ‘e’s got problems with his glandulars!

Together they beached the skiff as two other pirates, already onshore, came to their aid. Scratchy bellied another swig of rum a tad before he and Brody hoisted one end of a treasure chest out of the creaky craft. Brody did most of the lifting, while Scratchy did most of the drinking.

With the treasure safe ashore, Brody grumbled once more. Oh, for the love of Pete, batten that hatch, will ya, Scratchy?

t daybreak, Captain Smorgan and half his crew set off to hide treasure inland from the beach. Midday found them at their chosen place of concealment.

Inside a dank cave on a rugged hillside, two hours’ walk from Port Royal, Brody and a shipmate worked to secure the treasure chest that dangled down to them by a rope. They stalwartly guided the chest into a crevice in the damp, rocky cave wall. An underground stream roared beneath. From up above at the cave entrance, Captain Smorgan hollered to his buccaneers below.

That’s the last of her! Secure the treasure, then we’ll pull you up.

    Aye, aye, skipper!

Captain Smorgan muttered to himself, That’s the last of it, I say. But oh, there’ll be so much more. Harr, harr…harr, harr.

The crew tingled with excitement as Captain Smorgan placed his most loyal assistant in a jovial headlock.

Ye drew that thar map to lead me back to this here cave, didn’t ye, Scratchy, m’boy?

Aye, aye, good Captain, sir. I….

Mission accomplished, then, Scratchy, said the Captain, interrupting his valued first mate. Fine work, indeed. I do say, chum, well done…now hand over that bottle of rum ye be hidin’ thar.

Captain Smorgan took hold of the bottle, turned to his crew and declared, Listen up, scallywags, toil no longer. For our business affairs now succumb to the much anticipated and most desired festivities of this splendid day! Make thy way back towards the beach for one of thy Cap’n’s world famous feasts!

As the vivacious captain concluded his command, the crew cheered. Hip, hip, hooray!

Well, then, get thy bloated carcasses down there for supper!

The pirates followed their captain, apart from Scratchy who froze for a moment as realization swept over him. But Cap’n! Cap’n Smorgan, take heed! The bottle -.

Come, Scratchy, thar be pretty women where we be going! And I hunger for a bird with all the trimmins’, urged pirate Brody impatiently.

Aye! And a big fish, and a barrel of rum to go wit’r! a sidekick swabbie added.

Scratchy stood alone, confused and hesitant.

But Captain, the treasure map is written on the label of that thar bottle o’ rum thou hast o’ mine.

Scratchy peg-legged after the rambunctious crowd, the rumpus of which drowned out all competition.

Ahoy there, wait for me! Wait for meeee….

On the journey back to the beach, Captain Smorgan stopped dead in
