When the early European explorers began sailing the high seas, they had a lot to fear. Storms, unseen landforms and creatures stranger than their wildest imaginings might rise from the depths and destroy their ships. Fast forward half a millennium and the first purpose-built cruise ship, Prinzessin Victoria Luise, left on her maiden voyage from Hamburg in June 1900. Cruising, though far safer and more comfortable than on the likes of Magellan’s carrack, still meant crossing the ocean’s treacherous expanse without radar and GPS.
