Chapter One

Spending a Friday evening alone was just another typical night for Lori Jones. Especially now, since she lost her job working as an assistant for a director on film and TV sets. When Lori asked her boss why he suddenly let her go, he told her, "you don’t quite have the right...um... look for this position..."

Yeah, I get it. I’m not skinny—go figure.

But Lori loved to cook and to whip something up in the kitchen. She twisted the knob to medium, firing up her gas stove. A blue flame danced around the rusted metal eye as she sat down her pot.

I bet James is out having fun. Lori pondered.

James was her ex-boyfriend, a struggling actor she met when she first moved out to Los Angeles. Just three weeks ago, he broke up with her when he landed a starring role in a daytime television show. When Lori first moved to California, she hoped for warmer weather and sunny days unlike her old home in rainy Toronto. All of her friends had great jobs, were starting families and spent vacations on exotic far away beaches...
