Sarah came into the house to see her sister, Millie running toward their bedroom crying. She went to follow her to find out what had happened when she was met by Martha and Beth. They wanted to prepare her, when suddenly, Sarah was called into the kitchen by her mother. Her father motioned for her to sit at the table. Her mother sat next to him.

Across from her, an older woman sat wearing a heavy scarf and clothes that seemed extremely warm for such a nice spring day. Sarah, although she’d never met one, had heard about some gypsy families traveling thru the area and had been warned against talking with them. It seemed very unusual for her parents to invite any of them into their home.

Sarah, this is Mrs. Sullivan. She will be working with you and your sisters on getting husbands, announced her father. She has already talked to your sisters so now it is your turn.

So, this is Sarah? She is where in the order of your daughters, asked Mrs. Sullivan.

She is the youngest, answered her father. I know you normally don’t help girls this young but I want to include her, also.

Sarah went to say something when her mother tapped her hand under the table not to speak.

You said she was fifteen? She does look older so that is to your advantage here. If no one decides to question her, then there will be no problem, commented the woman. She is a little pale. She isn’t sickly is she?

Father replied, No, just fair skinned.

You said you had nine girls, where are the others?

They are already married. There are just the six now -- Martha, Grace, Beth, Sarah, Anna, and Millie

The others look good and I will have no problem placing them. However, the youngest, Sarah is her name... she is small and looks skittish. Most of my clients are out on the open frontier in the northern territory of the Dakotas. There really aren’t any cities there. She will have to deal with animals and the elements. Most of the men asking for mail order brides are still getting established. Are you sure she will be suited for this?

She is healthy and very capable of pulling her weight, added her mother. We may not be on a farm but there is still plenty of rugged work that needs to be done here. There is no luxury or easy living here.

Sarah got up from the table and rushed out of the room and joined her sisters in one of the bedrooms.

You need to understand something, Mrs. Sullivan continued, Most of these men do not have the time and often the patience to be catering to or teaching someone how to do the country chores.

Mrs. Sullivan put her hand up when the mother was about to speak.

Your life here is quite different from where they are going, so you need to make sure this is where you want your daughters to go.

Both the mother and father nodded in agreement.

Also remember, the men who have contacted me for brides have already taken care of my fees, so they are expecting their wives when I arrive with the girls. Now, I assure you I do my best to place the girls with proper and caring men. The girls are given an option of whether they want to stay with their husbands to be, meaning they are to give them a chance of three years before they can break the contract, at which time they can contact me and I will make other arrangements for them. I will be there for them too, if there are any problems. Think of me as their substitute mother while they go thru this process.

Somewhat satisfied, mother excused herself and headed to the girls’ bedroom. Stopping at the door, she listened to the conversation they were having among themselves.

Do you really think mother and father will make us do this? asked Anna through her tears. I don’t want to do this. I want to stay here.

Sarah looked at her sister’s faces, most of them showing indifference.

I don’t know, answered Grace. Doesn’t father know we may already have some men who want to marry us and just haven’t done it yet?

The girls looked at Grace, expecting her to possibly announce she may have someone but she didn’t come forth with any names. I’m just afraid of what is going to happen to us out there. What if we don’t like whoever they set up for us?

Looks like we don’t have a say in this, replied Martha, realizing mother was just behind the door.

Entering the room, mother cupped each girl’s face, wiped away their tears and gave them a peck on the forehead. Sitting down next to the eldest, Martha, she knew they were all reflecting on earlier conversations of being offered up for arranged marriages or mail order brides and the uncertainty of what was ahead of them.

They’d thought, as children those days would never come or their parents would change their minds. Or, at the very least, they would run into someone whom they fell in love with so they wouldn’t have to go through with their wishes.

Unfortunately, only three of the girls managed to avoid that fate. The girls linked hands as they sat on the bed, wondering what was ahead for them and their future.

Mother, do you think we will be able to go together? asked Beth, the third daughter.

It’s not for me to say. It is how Mrs. Sullivan decides, as well as the men who contract with her.

I don’t want to, cried Anna, a year older than Sarah. I will run away first.

Mother snapped, You mind yourself and do as you are told. You have been brought up better than that.

She rose and walked to the door.

"You knew this day was coming. You girls are of age to be wives and this is for your best interest. Your
