    CHILDREN

    There is a tightening, a filling,

    and my belly is grown,

    from the secret gestation

    of blood and bone.

    I place wet fingers

    in a fruiting womb, and with

    a visceral slip or a hard labour,

    these children come.

    I give birth to ciphers, cadences,

    songs and a river of sound,

    then find myself breathless,

    at living forms.

    I would hold these babies;

    lullaby them in my arms,

    they would rest there humming,

    never lost or spurned.

    But they squeal to be out,

    so full of themselves,

    and how they secretly preen,
