Cindy fretted about the quandary she was in with her hated next-door neighbor. It had been days since Larry had contacted her and she worried that the man was planning something drastic. The man’s dreadful humiliation was becoming quite intimidating and Cindy didn’t know how to fight it. When she glanced at the calendar, her heart skipped a beat, as she remembered Larry’s demands for the upcoming Wednesday poker night.

She hated wasting time at work by thinking of her personal problems, but somehow Cindy found it impossible to forget the terrifying blackmail. One Wednesday a month Cindy knew her husband would play poker with his buddies and Larry demanded she visit him when Andy went out. The phone rang and she immediately answered without thinking. Mother, I’m home for a few days. On the way in the door I noticed Larry waving at me so I’m on my over to visit him, Jill said.

Cindy’s heart stopped and she panicked. Honey, please don’t, she said and then realized she didn’t want to scare her daughter. Honey, I will take time off and be home right away. Wait for me!

Don’t bother, mother. I’m on my way out the door, as I haven’t seen them for a long time. Brad and Dale might be home so it will be nice seeing them, Jill stated and immediately hung up, knowing her neighbor was home alone because she had talked to him already.

Cindy merely stared at the dead handset with a growing uneasiness. She could hardly breathe when she hung up the phone and it felt like a twenty pound weight was on her chest. Despite her daughter’s request, she left work and rushed home, as fast as she could. Cindy ran into the house and found no one there and a messy handwritten note on the kitchen counter. Mom, I’ll be home about the time you get home at five. Luv you, and the note was signed with a couple of big kisses.

Cindy wanted to run over and give the man a piece of her mind. She walked over to the living room window that faced the neighbor’s and stared at the quiet house. Nothing moved and there was no visible sign anyone was home, but Cindy knew her reviled neighbor was likely taking advantage of her innocent daughter.

The four hour wait was the longest of her life. Cindy cleaned the house and cleaned it again, trying to keep herself busy so she wouldn’t dwell on the awful predicament. When the patio doors opened and Jill came home, Cindy simply stared in utter disbelief. The girl’s face was fully flushed and her clothes looked like she had been through a war, but the absolute worst thing was the brazen leather collar around the girl’s slender neck.

Despite the terrible appearance, Cindy practically ran to greet her daughter. Oh baby, oh baby, I’m so glad to see you, she whispered and hugged the girl with a sincere embrace. Honey, I don’t think you realize what you’re doing... by going over there, Cindy said and nodded her head towards the neighbor’s.

Jill sensed her mother’s anxiety and she grinned. Larry said you would be upset and angry, she replied and tried to pull away.

No, honey, no. I’m not mad... honestly!

Mother, I’m old enough now and can see whoever I want.

Yes, I know, honey, Cindy replied, as her eyes focused on the menacing leather collar. I know.

Apparently you know about us... that Larry and I are having an affair.
