This book is the first in a series of 6 teaching the nuts and bolts of sewing and making a quilt. I highly recommend Volume 1 to a beginner or for someone who feels they need a refresher course. Important lessons about straight of grain in the fabric are detailed. If unlike me you didn’t have home economics in high school, this information doesn’t generally get out to the new seamstress. Accuracy in cutting fabric and ¼” seam allowances are stressed. Each section of the book is illustrated with step-by-step photographs with well written instructions as well as little exercises in sewing. Projects are provided to teach actual hands-on implementation of the techniques taught.I was pleasantly surprised that the authors also provided a beginning lesson on drafting quilt patterns. This information will come in handy to any quilter sometime in the future when they begin to adapt commercial quilting patterns or designing their own quilt patterns.
