Born to a Broomfield, Chelmsford, Great Britain farming family in 1933, Alan Stacey (August 29, 1933-June 19, 1960) demonstrated a remarkable ability to compensate for a handicap. He became a successful international racer despite having no lower right leg. He lost it at 17 in a motorcycle accident. His race cars were equipped with a motorcycle type twist grip throttle.

Undeterred by the accident that necessitated wearing an artificial leg, Stacey began racing cars in 1955. Alan started his racing career driving a home-built Lotus MkVI from which he moved up to another kit car, a Lotus Eleven. He raced this car for Team Lotus at Le Mans.

16 wins in 1957 secured for Stacey a 1958 Formula 1 ride. Alan won the Farningham Trophy at Brands Hatch on April 7, 1958. He recorded another impressive victory at Crystal Palace on May
