FORMULA 3’S ERA OF THE REAL SCREAMERS

The Formula 3 story begins in the immediate post-war years as motorsport gradually returned after the conflict. Simple 500cc racing cars, using motorbike engines, were the first purpose-built singleseaters of a generation and the 500cc category roared into life as early as 1946 in the Bristol area.

Most cars were home built; some were very good and others were not as more and more enthusiasts saw the class as a way for the person in the street to go motor racing. Saloon car racing was for the future and most sports/GT cars were either too old or too expensive.

The class caught on and was officially given the Formula 3 tag in 1950. The arrival of John Cooper
