CHARACTERS
Joe Your typical late-20-something white guy. He's just finished graduate school and has started his career. His whole life is ahead of him and his possibilities are endless. Luck seems to find him at every turn, and he sailed through higher education with little or no difficulties. He's been Alex's friend since the third grade.
Alex Joe's life-long friend who is in many ways the opposite of Joe: he's not white, he's short, he's not academically gifted, and he's deeply insecure. His life has been a serious of great ideas followed by mediocre followup and failure. He currently works for the local University for the agriculture department. His job is to maintain local vineyards and help the faculty with their studies. It's a blue-collar job, which isolates Alex among his high-school friends, all of whom have gone onto higher education.
ACT I
(The curtain opens and two men in their late twenties, Joe and Alex, are seated at a table at a restaurant, laughing as though they've just shared a great joke. They've been friends since the third grade -- in fact, today is the 20th anniversary of their friendship.)
JOE
Man, am I glad to get away from the office for a bit.
ALEX
Yeah? How are thing over there?
JOE
Oh you know, it's work, right? Pretty slow today, just doing some boring grunt work.
ALEX
Harsh.
JOE
Eh, it's not that bad. They have me working on a really cool project actually.
ALEX
(Showing interest.)
Yeah? What's it about?
JOE
Well... I really can't talk about it.
ALEX
Why not?
JOE
(Smugly.)
It's classified.
ALEX
Oh...
