For all those who love the lions as much as I do

Also for all those individuals who see things just a little bit differently—variety is the spice of life, so let’s heat things up.

    Chapter One

WHAT’S VALENTINE’S Day? Leo sat opposite Axl at the dining room table and toyed with his lunch. He should’ve been eating his sandwich, not playing with it, but he couldn’t concentrate. He stared at Axl, his roommate and fuck partner. Have you ever heard of it?

Axl frowned and finished his sandwich. He didn’t say anything right away and stared right back at Leo. I haven’t, no.

Oh. I figured you’d know. Leo resumed eating. He’d seen an advertisement for a special gathering at the dance club and wondered what the sign meant. Usually, Axl knew stuff—he’d been at Sanctuary longer than Leo and seemed to be an expert on everything. Even if Axl didn’t know what he was talking about, he played as if he did.

Leo shoved a lock of hair out of his eyes. Once, he’d thought being a lion was easy. All he had to do was allow the children at the petting zoo to touch him. Easy. He frolicked in the pen and lolled on the carpet with the kids. When he got too big to be around the children, he’d been pushed out to the open-air pen. He’d thought he’d be killed or disappear like the other male lions, but he’d been lucky. He’d been able to shift. He’d thought the transition between being human and allowing the lion to take over would be simple, but it wasn’t.  There weren’t many people who understood what he went through. Few people could. He had an animal within him, battling to have superiority. He cared about his friends and his partner and never knew when the lion would choose to take over in order to protect his loved ones. He still wasn’t sure how to control the animal—especially around Axl. Axl wanted so much from him and so did the lion. Maybe it would’ve been easier if he hadn’t been able to shift.

Leo nudged his empty plate across the table and leaned back in his chair. He liked his ability to shift between his human and lion forms, but being a human was hard. Turning into a human showed Leo just how complicated things could get.
