    Chapter 1:  Sherrie

Iwas in love. Not the kind of love you have for your first car, your first puppy, or your first doll but a love where someone first touched me in an intimate and personal way. It was the last day of high school and my friend, Summer Blandford, invited me to stay for the weekend at her family’s estate in Connecticut.

We had become friends because we were both different and very much alike. I was different because I was one of the few low income black girls who managed to get a scholarship to a prestigious high school in New Jersey. I had worked my tail off every year I can remember. When kids were sitting on the stoops in Brooklyn on Saturdays, I was busy taking prep classes.

Summer was different because she was one of the few white girls who enjoyed the things I enjoyed. The same movies, reality shows on television, and she dressed different from most of the girls in my school. Somewhere between high fashion and cheap chic. Not only that, she declared that she would become an actress, and she was going to Hollywood. I agreed to run scenes with her on our off time which solidified our friendship.

I am one of her rare friends but the girls in our high school respected and revered her. I think it had to do with money. Her family is very rich.

One day she asked me, What are you going to do now that school is over?

    I’m going to college naturally.

Well I’m not going to waste my time on college, she had said to me. After all, why should she, her parents had money, and she could afford to explore what she wanted to do with her life, but I didn’t have that luxury. I had to go to college or work, but first I had to get a scholarship because my family had no money. College was a luxury.

Sooner or later I had to pitch in with food and rent for my mother’s apartment. But she saw what I was trying to do something with my life, and she gave me a pass. When Summer invited me to her home for a visit, I was happy to get away. I was happy to go somewhere, anywhere
