    CHAPTER ONE

    TRUE FRIENDS

Connie Kavell sat at her cluttered antique dressing table waiting for her friends, Linda Roberts and Debbie Gordon, to arrive. She turned to peek out her bedroom window one more time. The first Friday in March in this small town of Dresden was promising new beginnings with the hint of tulip bulbs, tree buds and the final melt, but still no friends.

Connie braided her own hair. She looked in the mirror trying to coordinate her fingers through the multiple strands of hair. Her new favorite Gasteroid tape was playing and she sang along with the lead singer.

"Purple hair, it looks so fine,

a little far out, a little like mine.

A radical statement, a major voice,

from one I know you will rejoice…"

She was having a sleepover tonight and knew her two friends hated the Gasteroids. It was important to get her fill now before they arrived. The purpose of the get-together was to study for a series of tests beginning on Monday. The girls had excellent study rituals that worked very well for them, and because of their shared success, there was no parental disapproval.

A loud knock at the door heralded Linda and Debbie’s arrival. Mrs. Kavell waved them in and stepped aside as the energetic girls scurried toward Connie’s room.

I thought you two would never get here, Connie wailed. What took you so long?

Debbie had to walk her little brother home from his friend’s house, Linda replied. Why? We’re not late.

We have plenty of time, Debbie cut in, eyeing her heavyset friend with brown eyes and hair, whose bubbly personality threatened to erupt.

I know. I was just anxious. Connie finished up with her hair.

I see you have that stupid music playing, sighed Linda. I’m going to change it.

Connie watched Linda and Debbie shuffle through her tapes. Linda had a fair complexion and blue eyes. Debbie had dark-colored skin, black hair, dark eyes, and lashes. One was short, the other tall. One was practical, the other wise. They were opposites by eye but joined by that eternal bond of friendship.

They’re not my favorite either, Debbie agreed, but I like their beat.

Your tapes put me to sleep. Connie laughed good-naturedly. I’m not ready for slumber yet. Hey! Mom made us some cookies.

    Chocolate chip? Linda asked hopefully.

What else? Of course, chocolate chip! The look on Connie’s face made Linda chuckle.

Maybe we better study first and have our treat when we take a break, Debbie said reasonably.

You’re right. Hand me the book. Linda took control and tried to banish the visions of chocolate chip cookies from her mind.

Once they got into their routine time flew. They made up rap tunes to help with problem areas.

    "Assiniboine Indians just couldn’t see,

and American wolf hunters wouldn’t agree.

When the Cypress Hill massacre was indeed a fact,

    McDonald in Ottawa thought it
