    ***~~~***

A voluptuous shadow glided through the silent hallways of the House. Neither human nor ghost, the beautiful, black-haired being was something other than living or undead. Long, straight hair flowed behind her in whispering tresses, and her pale skin stood out against brooding darkness filling the halls and corridors of the House. Her tight, midnight gown showed off pale legs and more than generous cleavage while below her slender waist, curvaceous hips moved with a slow, sensual rolling. Her thick-lashed eyes glowed with an unearthly, red light, and her crimson lips were parted in a wicked, predatory smile.

She was the Keeper of the House, and an eager anticipation filled her thoughts. Her enormous breasts expanded out against the low-cut front of her gown as her breathing quickened. A warm flush of arousal washed through her voluptuous body, and she savored the sweet torture of longing that began to blossom between her thighs.

Soon, she thought, suppressing the shiver trying to run down her slender back. He is close. He will be here soon.

Everything was prepared. This was the night when she would learn if she was right. She would find out if the one approaching the House would be able to help her create an upheaval that would send ripples though both the worlds of shadow and light.

She would learn if she had found the one who could slake her inhuman lusts as no other possibly could.

A heavy fog obscured the eerie woods as Dirk drove down the deserted, dirt road. It was the middle of the night, and the twin beams of his car’s headlights provided only a feeble illumination that barely cut through the swirling fog.

Dirk tried to swallow, but his mouth was dry. He glanced up into the car’s rear-view mirror, his dark eyes looked back at him below loose strands of plain, brown hair. The gaze of those eyes was filled with barely controlled fear. He had been told he had an honest, warm face, but now his features were pale and tense. It was the face of someone being inexorably drawn toward a terrible, unknown fate.

Shivering, Dirk’s eyes were pulled down from the mirror to the large, metal-bound book resting on the passenger’s seat beside him. It was a heavy, cumbersome thing with ornate, brass fittings. The leather cover and metal bindings did not show any signs of age, but it had the antiquated look of a tome written centuries ago. An archaic, brass lock sealed the book, but Dirk had never tried to force or break it open. He did not want to know what was inside it. The cover alone had been enough to terrify him even as it fascinated him..
