    Arena di Verona

    Third Roman amphitheater, by size, in Italy.

    It was built between the end of the reign of Augustus and the beginning of that of Claudius, completed around 30 AD

    The basic element of the plant of the amphitheater is an ellipse (the central space in which took place shows).

    The arena is 75.68 m x 44,43m, i.e. 250 x 150 Roman feet.

    Originally the Arena had two fences but the outer collapsed (you can only see a short section called wing).

    The inner fence is characterized by two orders of 72 arches built of blocks of white and pink stone of Verona with top bands of stone and brick.

    During the imperial period the arena was used to host gladiatorial combat.

    Since 1913 the Arena is a prestigious seat of the opera season (see website Fondazione Arena di Verona).
