Chapter I - The Six Constants and Eight Considerations

All war is governed by six constant factors. These six constant factors must be taken into account when seeking to determine the conditions of any battlefield.  These constants, and therefore any battlefield, should be understood by every general, as the generals who utilise the best understanding are always victorious. 

The Six Constants

The Moral Law  -  The Moral Law causes people to be in complete accord with their objective, such that they will follow it faithfully, regardless of their lives and undismayed by any danger.

Heaven  -  Heaven relates to night and day, cold and heat, times and seasons.

Earth  -  Earth signifies distances great and small, danger and security, types of ground and terrain, the chances of life and death.

The Command  -  The Command stands for the Virtues of wisdom, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness.

Method  -  Method is the marshalling of an army in its proper subdivisions, the graduations of rank among the officers, and the maintenance of roads by which supplies may reach the army.

Discipline  -  Discipline is the control of resources.

The six constants are the basis of eight considerations through which victory or defeat can be forecast.

With whom lie the advantages derived from Heaven?

With whom lie the advantages of the Earth?

Which of the two generals has the strongest Command?

Which army operates with the best Method?

On which side is Discipline most rigorously enforced?
