    ABOUT SUN TZU

The reputed author of ‘The Art of War’, Sun Tzu, was an ancient military leader, strategist and philosopher. His supreme work, The Art of war’ is regarded as the best single book written on the subject of military strategy. Though the book was much famous in Asia, it got acceptance in the West during the late eighteenth century only. Even in recent times, his strategies and philosophies have great impact on the modern world. Nevertheless, his realism is still a question of debate, many believes that he belonged to the Warring States Period (476–221 BC) based on the traditional Chinese accounts of that time.

The Age of Warring States was a period when there were constant wars, conflicts and uncertainties between the seven nations, Zhao, Qi, Qin, Chu, Han, Wei and Yan, to gain the advantage and control of the vast fertile empire of Eastern China. Though not certain about the exact birth date, some documents states that Sun Tzu was born in Qi where some points he was a native of Wu. He was a military general and strategist under the king of Wu, King Helü. His experiences as a leader in battle fields were compiled to the famous military treatise, ‘The Art of War’. In this book, military readers found a holistic approach to strategy that was powerful and deep, and it is truly a masterpiece on strategy. According to Sun Tzu, an ideal leader should be spiritually enlightened and at the same time should be capable of realizing ‘unfathomable plans’. Other than the military theories and methods, this book also describes the diplomacy and hence it got wide acceptance among the political leaders and business management personalities.

Now let’s delve through the most effective and thought-provoking quotes from this ever-greatest military strategist.

    QUOTES BY SUN TZU

    Character

A sovereign of high character and intelligence must be able to know the right man, should place the responsibility on him, and expect results.

    Peace

The best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities. It is best to win without fighting.

To fight and conquer in all our battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

Know thy self, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.

Peace proposals unaccompanied by a sworn covenant indicate a plot.

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.

In all history, there is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare. Only one who knows the disastrous effects of a long war can realize the supreme importance of rapidity in bringing it to a close.

All war is based on deception.

If their forces are substantial, prepare for them; if their forces are strong, avoid them.

    Art

Carefully study the well-being of your men, and do not overtax them. Concentrate your energy and hoard your strength. Keep your army continually on the move and devise unfathomable plans.
