“The Borrowers” by Mary Norton was first published in 1952. It is a fantasy novel mainly for children. The story revolves around the lives of a family of tiny people. These tiny people live very secretly in the walls and floors of an English house.
These tiny creatures borrow from the big people for their survival. “The Borrowers” is one of the five books n the same series. The same borrowers’ family features in all these five books. Eventually, they leave their house.
It is obviously a highly fantastic idea, but it is also mentionable how the author got this idea to write the present novel. It is assumed that it was the result of the author’s bad eyesight.

It is obviously a highly fantastic idea, but it is also mentionable how the author got this idea to write the present novel. It is assumed that it was the result of the author’s bad eyesight.
It is known that Norton was not able to see too well as a child. She would imagine that little creatures lived in shallow pools, banks, and hedgerows, etc. She got inspired to write a story on these tiny creatures.
The Borrowers
was recognized as the year’s most outstanding children’s book by a British author. It was the winner of Carnegie Medal from the Library Association in the year 1952.
The book has been adapted into movies, television serials, and for stage. It has also been translated into several different languages.
It is considered to be one of the most widely read book among the children around the world.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
As the story opens, we find Kate, a young girl, sewing a quilt, sitting with her aunt May. While working on the quilt Mrs. May begins to talk about her brother. She tells Kate that her brother had told her about the Borrowers.
