Seneca County, Ohio 1870 Census: An Everyname Index

This indexing project began several years ago, when there were no indexes available for the 1870 census. Any index would have been helpful, but the Seneca County Genealogical Society wanted to make this one even better than most of the other ones done statewide. They indexed every name of the people who were listed in the 1870 census for the county. This, of course, made the project take longer and the final book lengthier, but we think it will be more useful and help more people find those families they are looking for.

Many members have worked on this indexing project for several years. They will not be named in fear of overlooking a hard-working member, but the Society does need to recognize the tireless chairmen of the publishing committee for keeping this project going: Beverly and Jerry Wheatley. Also, a special thanks to Joan Dysinger for her and her nephew, Kent Cartwright’s computer skills. The Society appreciates all the volunteers who contributed hours of time compiling all this data and inputting it.

To use this index, simply look up your family’s name, and write down the location and page number and look up the printed page number on the microfilm of the 1870 Seneca County census. Copies of that film are available at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library and the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library in Fremont, locally, and across the state and country.

    A key to the index:

Lastname, Firstname: Name of the person

Location: A code for the county and the township; all the indexing is for Seneca County alone.

Page: Page number to look for on the microfilm; use the printed number in the upper right hand comer.

Head: Y or N: code for whether the person listed is the head of a household or not. Y = yes, he is head the household, N= No, he is not.

Hhold: Abbreviation for household, this is the number of the household on the page. Simply helps to locate a person on a page and also can be used to determine if certain people are living in the same household.
