About this ebook

Thomas Sayre came with his family from England to Lynn, Massachusetts in the early 1630's. Among descendants of Thomas were clergymen, surgeons, attorneys, ambassadors, and representatives of almost every profession. Francis B., cowboy, professor of law, and ambassador, was son-in-law of former President Woodrow Wilson. Zelda was the wife of American novelist, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and subject of one of his books. David A. was silversmith, banker, and founder of Lexington's Sayre School. Many Sayre descendants were taken by wars in service to America and never had the chance to win recognition for their inherent abilities.
SAYRE FAMILY another 100-years, in a large part, focuses on the early pioneers who came to or passed through the Onio Valley of West Virginia and Ohio. At least three direct descendants of Thomas had made settlements in that area by the Nineteenth Century. One, David Sayre, came from New Jersey about 1778, and left many descendants who still lived in that area at the beginning of the Twenty-first Century, The bulk of this genealogy covers those, while other Sayre families whose ancestral links were not discovered are also included. The three generations of ancestors above each family block makes tracing easier.

Information used in the preparation of this book has been collected and assembled by humans. Humans are prone to make mistakes. I have found conflicts in dates by the same persons given to me at different times. I have had different names and/or dates for the same person given to me by different contributors, and in some instances, from the same family. Having no personal knowledgeo f the individual families or means of confirming all data given to me, I used what I was given in most cases. I tried to be consistent and not change anything. I always requested that data be written and mailed to me, however, some things were given me by phone. Of material received both ways, Ic ould have misunderstood.

Some information, even if correct and appropriate at the time of writing, could seem incorrect whenr ead years later. Divorce, job changes, births, death, etc. cause changes. Dates recorded in family bibles often disagree with dates on tombstones and in the courthouses. There are typos where the fingers misspell and make a number wrong. For instance the date, 1820 may appear as 1920, and 1920 may appear as 1902, etc. I must apologize for my lack of skill, knowledge and use of established standards. Especially to those who were wrongly affected, I apologize.

Particular attention was given to the material compiled for this work to avoid invasion of privacy. I have assumed that everyone who contributed data to me intended me to use it in this genealogy. It will be the responsibility of each reader to respect the privacy and rights of all people named herein.

I made every attempt to obtain permission to use information from all sources whether or not a copyright was registered. In the text and with illustrations, I have attempted to credit all contributors and sources, published and unpublished. Any credits that have been overlooked were unintentional, and I offer my most sincere apology. Special care was taken to avoid copyright infringement.

I had no formal training in book writing and computers. In completing this book using computers, I became self-taught and compiled everything using my own logic.

    WHY—A GENEALOGY—WHY?

"There is a moral and philosophical respect for our ancestors which elevates the character and improves the heart.

"It is wise for us to recur to the history of our ancestors. Those who are regardless of their ancestors, and of their posterity, who do not look upon themselves as a link connecting the past with the future, in the transmission of life from their ancestors to their posterity, do not perform their duty to the world.

To be faithful to ourselves, we must keep both our ancestors and their posterity within reach and grasp of our thoughts and our affections, living in the memory and retrospect of the past, and hoping with affections and care for those who are to come after us. We are true to ourselves only when we act with pride for the blood we inherit, and which we are to transmit to those who shall soon fill our places. Daniel Webster

I began genealogical research about 1960 as my own project. A scrap of paper with birth, marriage, and death dates for my Grandmother Sayre’s family was found in an old trunk that my dad kept. I thought, How neat! I’ll just do that for as many of the family as I can. For more than twenty years I did genealogy for my own pleasure, seldom giving thought that my work would pass on to someone who would want to know where I got my information. About 1980, I became acquainted with Ada Ruth Sayre who had collected an enormous amount of Sayre Genealogy mostly from the Jackson-Mason County, West Virginia area. We combined our research materials.

In 1995, when my employment was taken away, I decided that I would like to be a certified professional genealogist. When I started studying for certification, one thing quickly became clear. I had been lax in citing my sources over all those years. It turns play into work, but in the end, source citations are something nice to have. I went back and tried to locate sources that were not originally recorded, but I was unsuccessful in many cases. So take a tip from someone who learned late, CITE YOUR SOURCES!

In this genealogy, I never used footnotes, but attempted to cite sources in the text. I included three ancestral generations above each family block, then listed up to three generations of descendants under each family block. Where there were more than three generations on one or more of the descendants, I used a plus (+) symbol and moved forward to start a new family block for that descendant. I tried to keep these in order, but in cases you find some out of order, it may be because of my error, or because of the way I received the information. Please take the time and patience to try to understand.

I attempted to write this entire work in past tense. One of the strongest influencing factors for that was the picture of The Old Sayre House opposite page 18 in SAYRE FAMILY by Theodore M. Banta where the caption included the words still standing. That book was reprinted several times, and many descendants made an effort in the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s to go to Southampton to see that house. The book was published in 1901, the house was torn down in 1912, so many visitors to Southampton were somewhat disappointed. Once something is written, circumstances which made it true and factual at the time often change, but the printed words remain unchanged.

Conflicting concerns have arisen from including adopted children. Some have said, Don’t include me if you must identify me as adopted. Others have asked that their adopted children be included without condition or reservation. Others are critical of including adopted children in families other than their own. Some raise eyebrows and point a wicked finger at the illegitimate links. I tried to please as many as possible. I tried to remove the families who asked to be removed. While dealing with the importance of genealogy in its strictest sense, I tried to be accurate in reporting. I compiled this genealogy in the spirit of family and integrity."

Where known, I tried to include cause of death. I consider the most accurate source to be from a person’s death certificate. In many cases, however, it was simply reported by a family member.

Many years and efforts of many people have gone into compiling, proofreading and correcting this material, yet, there will be errors. Once a book is in print, errors cannot be corrected in that print. However, when you find errors you can make notes in your own book, and you can tell other people. A good sharp No. 2 pencil is the best tool I have found for entering notes into books. Ink often bleeds into the paper fibers and becomes unsightly and sometimes unreadable.

APPRECIATION—To all who provided moral support, information, and finances, I express my sincere appreciation. If I were to list all, the list would surely be enormous and someone would surely be missed. When you read this, those of you who contributed will know, but also know that others reading this for the first time will appreciate you most. Those of you who are reading for the first time, know that we tried to accurately provide you a record and lasting memorial to the Sayre family.

#2702 DAVID SAYRE   David Sayre Cemetery

    Photos from Ada Ruth Sayre

DAVID SAYRE married 1st, 27 September 1838 MINERVA STONE, who was born 25 March 1819 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, daughter of George and Lucinda (Miller) Stone. The Stones came to the area now Jackson County in October 1823. Minerva (Stone) Sayre died 13 April 1851. David Sayre married 2nd, 28 August 1851 MARTHENIA HILL who was born 1 October 1832, daughter of Laban and Rebecca (Woodruff) Hill. She died 10 March 1872. David married 3rd, in Mason County, 18 July 1872 MARY E. STEPHENSON, who was born about 1824 and died 7 August 1875. Burial was in the Stephenson Cemetery at Eight-Mile in Mason County. David married 4th, in Mason County, 27 July 1876 NANCY SCANTLIN. She was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in January 1836 daughter of John and Nancy (Taylor) Scantling. David died 15 February 1895. Nancy died 8 February 1928. David, his first, second, and fourth wife were buried in the David Sayre family cemetery, Cow Run, Jackson, West Virginia.

As reported in Hardesty’s History circa 1883, none of this family ever used tobacco or liquor for anything other than medicinal purposes. For six or eight years previous to the Civil War, David served as Captain of the State Militia. He served one term of four years in Jackson County as Justice of the Peace. After giving his married children a good farm, he was still the fortunate owner of a good farm of 1,500 acres, extending into Mason County. He had a tannery on his farm.

A story remembered by Thomas E. and Minerva Sayre, passed down to their daughter, Ada Ruth, is of interest here. Jeremiah was David’s first son, born before his first marriage. David’s fourth wife, Nancy lived in the home after David’s death. It was located close to the cemetery where David was buried. Nancy was sitting on the front porch when a man came walking down the road, opened the gate, and walked in. He came from the direction of the cemetery, and he had a beard like David’s. Nancy didn’t know what to think, as she had never heard of this son before. He sat on the porch with her and proceeded to tell her about his life.

    David Sayre’s children:

    10.   DAVID WESLEY SAYRE married MARY DIAN BARNETT. +

    11.   IRA VIRGIL SAYRE, born 6 August 1867, died 11 July 1882.

JEREMIAH D.9 SAYRE was born 12 July 1827 to Mary Elvira DeWeese. He was living with his son, John H. Sayre, Valley Township, Oklahoma when the 1900 census was taken. His birth date was given as July 1831 at that time. It was passed down through the Sayre traditions that Jeremiah preferred the Sayre name and would fight if called DeWeese. He married 1st, in Jackson County 11 July 1855 ELIZABETH LEWIS, who was born about 1841, daughter of William and Amelia Lewis. Jackson County Marriages gives this date as 25 June. Elizabeth Lewis and Rowena Lewis, who married Andrew Sayre, son of Benjamin #2700, were sisters. Elizabeth (Lewis) Sayre died between 1870 and 1875, and Jeremiah married 2nd, 16 February 1875 LOVINA (HALL) FORTUNE, daughter of Solomon and Delila (Hughes) Hall. Lovina Hall was born about 1834 and had married 1st, 23 July 1857 JOHN EDWARD FORTUNE and they had a large family in Vigo County, Indiana.

While still in his teens, Jerry Sayre traveled west, walking much of the way, eventually arriving in Oklahoma. It was told that he lived there with the Indians, perhaps the Cherokee who had been driven there by the U. S. Government about 1830. He learned from the Indian ways of living, hunting, and fishing.

JEREMIAH D. SAYRE, file designation SC 365.339 National Archives: mustered in as Private, Company A, 9th Regiment of West Virginia Volunteers to serve 3 years or during the war. He was mustered-in in Mason City 28 November 1861. He was taken prisoner at Summersville, West Virginia, 24 July 1862. To move the prisoners to Lynchburg, the rebels put Mr. Sayre on a wild colt to ride. This wild colt threw him and his collarbone and right shoulder were badly mashed, an event witnessed and testified to by Hiram Mercer, a comrade. He was paroled at Aikens Landing, Virginia, on 13 September 1862. His description was as follows: height, 5 foot 5 1/2 inches; 132 pounds; dark complexion. He reenlisted 1 January 1864 and in October of that year transferred to Company B 1st West Virginia Vet Volunteers and remained on the rolls of that company until he mustered out 24 July 1865. After that date, he lived in Angerona, Red House, and Winfield, West Virginia; Wauketa and Medford, Oklahoma; Aliquippa, Pennsylvania; Crystal Springs, Kansas; and Lynn Haven, Florida.

He returned to Oklahoma just before the land was opened up for settlement by the U. S. Government, about 1889. Jeremiah and two of his sons homesteaded land, but they had some disagreements. Soon his sons wanted all the land for themselves. About 1910, the sons tried to have their father legally declared incompetent and put away. Late at night, Jeremiah walked away from his home and made his way to Pennsylvania, where he thought his niece, Della Roush, was living. He was told that they had moved to Lynn Haven, Florida. So, again, Jeremiah set out on foot to find them.

In Lynn Haven, Jeremiah told his story and convinced Henry Roush to go with him to Oklahoma to reclaim his land. Together they returned to Oklahoma, proved Jerry’s competence, reclaimed and sold his land, then returned to Florida. He was given a small house on the property of Della and Henry Roush to live out the rest of his life. He, Uncle Jerry hunted with bow and arrow and caught many fish in the creeks and lakes around Lynn Haven. He grew and cured his own tobacco and was very spry for a man of 90 years. He lived in Lynn Haven, Florida, for thirteen years. According to his death certificate at Jacksonville, re: File #53, Registered # 189, Dr. W G. Lowe, M.D. attended him from 20 January until his death, 26 January 1924. Cause of death was stated as Lagrippe. His grave was found in Section F, the Roush Plot, Greenwood Cemetery, now in Panama City. The cemetery inscription recorded no dates, just Co A W VA Inf. The informant who gave family information for his death certificate was H. P. Roush of Lynn Haven, Florida. Children:

JOHN H.10 SAYRE was born in October 1856 in Jackson County, (W) Virginia. In 1999, I located his family in the Soundex for 1900 Oklahoma Census. He was living in Valley Township, Grant County, Oklahoma. His wife’s name, not clearly written, looked like Quinie. He married QUINDERRA J. (QUINNIE) SHULL. She was born in Illinois in April 1864. John and Quinnie lived on Section 27, Township 27, North of Range 6, Grant County, Oklahoma. Quinnie went to Canada. It was believed Quinnie accompanied Alma and her husband, Daniel Shepheard, and their three small children to Canada in 1914. John’s estate settlement was dated 10 March 1926.
