About this ebook

"Five Hundred Years in the New World, Vol. I: WHARTON/WHORTON & Allied Families of North Carolina & Beyond, 1684–2021" details the genealogy and background of the descendants of David Wharton and Mary Hobbs. Beginning in Craven and Pamlico counties in eastern North Carolina in 1684, the records follow members of the family as they move to Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, California, Texas, and many other states. This book highlights eight generations of the Wharton family, including the surnames Broughton, Cahoon, Cuthrell, Jones, Kittrell, Lupton, Martin, McCotter, Paul, Phipps, Riggs, Silverthorn, Slade, Stanton, Tingle, and Woodard. Author Lynn Hughes Akin, Ed.D., has provided a great reference for those researching their family history or those interested in genealogy in general. Follow the history of the Wharton family from the late 17th century until present day.

Hughes Akin has set out to follow the evidence. Many families have legends that have been passed down from member to member, but with historical records, it is possible that details were missed or misconstrued along the way. This is the challenge of familial research. In her effort to capture as full a picture of the family as possible, the author has meticulously researched each member of the Wharton family included in this book. All pertinent data has been recorded using simple genealogy research techniques available, including registers, wills, marriage records, death records, censuses, graves, and more.

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated firstly to my Grandparents, MARY ELIZABETH CHEWNING (1905-1996), educator and later office manager for my Grandfather, ROMIE LINDSEY WHORTON (1900-1982), who owned and operated shrimp boats and seafood packing plants in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Miss Mary was the epitome of the Southern belle; she dressed to the nines every day until a stroke at 90 forced her into a nursing facility. To her and Mr. Romie, family was everything, and I believe in my heart that they would be thrilled to read about their lineages and the connections we have made to our progenitors.

Secondly, this book is dedicated to my genealogy buddies: my mother, ANN BRYAN WHARTON HUGHES (1939- ) and her sisters, EDYTH MARIE WHORTON CALLOWAY (1922-2014) and DOROTHY LEE WHORTON LYNN (1923-2015), who infected me with the genealogy bug as a child and incited a life-long passion for genealogy that borders on fanaticism. We made numerous trips to North Carolina and I learned genealogy the old-fashioned way: on the road, in courthouses, in the woods and cemeteries on headstone hunts, and libraries, before armchair genealogy was even a thing. Aunt Edy and Aunt Dot would be amazed to see how far we have come, and even more thrilled to see how far back we have gone! We had some great times together, eating good (and not so good!) food, getting lost, staying in little Mom-and-Pop hotels, laughing a whole lot, and teasing Aunt Dot about eating peanut brittle! I wish they were here to see, not the final product, but the first incarnation!

Thirdly, this book is dedicated to my husband, JAMES PATRICK AKIN, my constant cheerleader, who puts up with me getting so engrossed in my research that I forget to eat, much less prepare meals, throwing seemingly random historical facts, names, and dates at him, and that I get excited over finding out someone’s middle initial was a F instead of a T or vice-versa. It helps that he majored in anthropology!

    INTRODUCTION

I did not mean to find major errors on my Grandmother’s Daughters of the American Revolution pedigree page. Honestly, I did not. I hoped that I was not the only one who noticed that the dates did not align. Thankfully, Grandmother was not the one who had done it; one of her great-Aunts had been the one to research the information and submit it to the DAR. I would have dreaded being the one to break it to her. However, it bothered me so much that I set out to either correct it or verify it. Now, do not get me wrong. I do not think it was done deliberately. It was done at a time when there was no Ancestry.com, or GenWeb’s, or Cyndi’s List, or any of the trendy, useful multitude of websites and applications. This was on-the-ground action. Grandmother’s Aunt spent time in courthouse basements, archives, and libraries, researching. Anybody who has handled old documents knows what I am talking about. Sometimes it is easier to read them in person and sometimes you feel like Socrates was trying to make you read Greek through a foggy snorkel mask. But apparently the DAR did not catch the errors either, because the Aunt, as well as my Grandmother and other family members, were admitted as members. So all this time, we were under the impression that we were descended from a Patriot with the interesting name of CLAUSEL B. CLAUSEL, who was a real person and really did fight in the Revolution. So started a lifelong quest to either prove it or disprove it. And disprove it, I did. I found that Mr. Clausel is somebody’s Patriot progenitor, just not ours. The good news is, I know who our Patriot progenitors are now, and you will find them in this body of work.

My Mom’s family, on both sides, has been in the New World since the beginning. When I say beginning, I mean early: American Indian, Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Plymouth beginnings. Being here early means loads of family legends that could be true or a load of exaggeration. Case in point: We had been told all our lives that one of my great-great-great grandmothers on my maternal grandfather’s side was an Indian (Native American) of one of the eastern North Carolina tribes. I identified with that my whole life. I even looked the part: high cheekbones, skin that tanned easily and stayed tan through winter, long jawline, and thick, long, straight, brownish-black hair that when Mom would part it and braid it into pigtails, I looked like a Native American photograph from the early 1900’s taken by Edward S. Curtis. So much so that I was cast as one of the Indian women at the first Thanksgiving when I was in the first grade without being given a choice. I studied up on the tribes. I learned about how they dressed and their customs. I even learned how to drum for the Green Corn Dance and other dances. I presented my findings to one of my classes at Emory University. I was sympathetic to anything Indian-related. Finally, DNA tests became more affordable, in 2015, I could not wait to get one to see if I could find out exactly which tribe I could identify with: Tuscarora, Pamlico, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Lumbee, Hatteras. And what do you know? It showed that I have ZERO Indian/Native American DNA. Not even a speck. I tell you: I had an identity crisis! Really! My mother does not believe it to be true. At some point we will be able to laugh about it. But not yet!

I guess what I am trying to say in this introduction is that we are told something long enough that it becomes believable, or at least a family legend. But the evidence negates that, and just like I have told my science students for over 30 years, you must follow the evidence no matter where it takes you. It reminds me of that Ancestry.com commercial that played on TV a year ago. The guy speaking talks about how his family thought they were German, so they learned German, played the accordion, and dressed in lederhosen. Then they took a DNA test and found out they are mostly Scottish. He said he traded in his German for Scottish Gaelic, a bagpipe, and a kilt. We are sort of like that family. Follow the evidence.

This work does its best to follow the evidence. I am sure there are pieces in the future that we will look back on when we have gathered more evidence to find that it is incorrect. Hopefully, I will not have to say, What the heck was I thinking!? Just like Grandmother Whorton’s Aunt, I am not trying to make errors on purpose. And if you have the evidence and I missed it, will you please let me know!?

    BEFORE READING/RESEARCHING

The following list are items I believe you need to know going into this first volume:

    1. DAVID WHARTON (1684-1712) is NOT our Immigrant – that remains to be determined.

    2. I know there will be errors. Information will be located and the narrative revised. Stay tuned!

    3. I used a straight numbering system so that in future revisions, new information can be entered on those individuals for whom I could not locate information prior to publication, or who were living at the time.

    4. I tried to be consistent with the writing and citations.

    5. Citations are in APA format. I have been an educator for over 30 years; that’s what we use. I haven’t used MLA or Chicago since the early 1980’s.

    6. In the beginning, my goal was to include every source I had for each person. That was ambitious, as I quickly amassed footnotes. I had to resort to choosing the 1, 2, or 3 best sources, so all a person’s information may not be found in a citation’s source. That does not mean I could not prove it with additional resources.

    7. At the end of each footnote in parentheses, you will find the exact name of the person to whom the record belongs, so researchers can look up the same record.

    8. The name Cahoon in any form (Cahoon, Cohoon, Calhoon, Calhoun, Colquhon, Colquhoun, Cahune, Culquhoun, etc.), especially in this body of work (and subsequent volumes, God willing), derives from the same name and they are likely relatives if they are in eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia. Another name that would fall under the same category includes Cuthrell (Kittrell, Kitterell, Cutrell Cotterell, Cotteril, Cotrell, etc.).

    9. Just like the Cahoons and Cuthrell’s above, name spellings were wide-open until the late 19 th to early 20th century. For example, Whorton is reported to have begun life as de Querton in Normandy before one of them went with William the Conqueror across the English Channel and wrested England away from the Anglo-Saxons. It evolved to be, among others, Wharton or Whorton . Several family members, my mother included (due to a birth certificate error), spell it with an a. Silverthorn is another. The addition of the e at the end ( Silverthorne ) was apparently at the whim of whoever was spelling it at the time, for whatever document was being written, but the branch of the family fell from the same tree, so to speak. We have that problem in Georgia with my married name!

    10. For the females in the family, I used their maiden name to identify them. I then identified any husbands they may have had, if possible, on their family break-down. This included their parents as well, if I could locate them or who they were conjectured to be.

    11. If the occupation of a family member was different from farmer on a census, I indicated it as such. Otherwise, they were likely farmers.

    12. You will notice that some of the people on here are stepchildren or half-siblings of the family. I included them here because it is possible that they would have had contact with the family, been raised with them, married them, or were otherwise in contact. This does not necessarily mean they are blood relations , but relations of the heart . They are part of the history, so why not include them? Hopefully, this will help others find them as well!

    13. I would like to profusely thank my Find A Grave heroes and heroines, some of whose names are engraved on my brain: Coley Jordan, J.D. Larimore, Bernd Doss, Jim Dugan, Sandi Gunter Hawkins, Sue Slade , the 2 Dougs, Doug Fitchett and Doug Williams , Barbara Haddon Blankenship , and many, many more. By going where I could not, you have helped my research (and countless others) to continue. God Bless you for doing what you do for history! Please don’t stop!

    14. Speaking of Find A Grave, in 1986 or ’87, in conversation between my mother’s sisters, Edyth and Dorothy, Aunt Dot’s husband Willert Howard Lynn, Sr. (1920-1996) , and Vernon Jennings Silverthorn (see 941. ), at which I was present (I was in college then and we were on one of our NC trips), in Vernon’s front yard in Merritt, he stated that he had first-hand knowledge that a logging operation working in Pamlico County several years earlier had dug a large hole and pushed in the fieldstones and ballast stones used as headstones (there may have been some engraved ones, too) belonging to one of the earliest cemeteries in Pamlico County (then Craven County) in order to access the trees they were cutting down for the paper industry. We might not have been able to glean genealogical information from fieldstone or ballast stone headstones, we would at least have been aware of the location of the resting place of some of our Wharton, Silverthorn, McCotter, Tingle, Phipps, or other progenitors. Those of you native to Pamlico or Craven County may have knowledge of this, but I wanted others to know about it. Oh, it breaks my heart! It also makes me incredibly angry!

    15. This is for my mother, my children, and my family. If you belong to one of these families, welcome, my cousin! If you’re researching, I hope I can help you on the yellow brick road to filling in family information or getting that next link in the chain! If you plan to criticize the way I’ve done this, it will fall on deaf ears. This is for my mother, my children, and my family. Whoever and Wherever you are. XxxOoo
