The doctor bent down and retrieved a briefcase from by the side of his chair. He snapped it open and removed a small notebook. "I'd like to take your pulse first, Jake," he said, "just to get a baseline, is that alright?"

Helplessly, I nodded.

He stood and pulled a small end-table out into the center of the room from where it had been pushed into a corner. He patted its surface. "Up here, if you don't mind."

"I appreciate that, doctor," I breathed, trying to calm down.

I could feel his fingers against my skin through the fabric of my shirt. Each little breath moved me against his touch. I felt a renewed flush rising in my cheeks as he stood with me, trying to help me calm down and only making my heart pound all the more.
