About this ebook

Love on the Rock
Although the DADT (Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy) was established during the 1990s (but it has been abolished in 2011), even before that, there
are some men who also love other men, who did not dare express their love openly. Perhaps because it was the zeitgeist; the time before was
more conservative than today. At the same time, there were apprehensions to express romantic feelings because it was war time.

Gilbert McDermott never thought of himself as gay. He never expected himself to fall in love with a junior officer, Louis Jones. Both men
met at Sangley Point or commonly called as The Rock, a crucial US Navy Base during World War II located in the Philippines. This is not a coming-out story; this is a recounting of how Gilbert met Louis and how both of them followed their hearts and loved each other deeply. Although Gilbert had apprehensions about being committed to a relationship but in the end, “there is no right time to fall in love except now.”

    Love on the Rock

    Part One

I will tell you as much as I can recount, The middle-aged man smiled. He was in his mid-forties but his body was lean; he still maintained the physique that he had during his days as a member of the US Navy. However, most of his hair has already turned to a whitish color. It was impossible to tell what his former hair color was like. Well, I was in my early twenties when I enlisted for the navy. My family was from a military background; more or less I was going to be a soldier. I was partially excited because it would be my first time leaving home but I didn’t want to leave. I have this girl that I liked, her name was Liz but I never told her I liked her or something romantic.

The former sailor paused and drank the water beside him in one gulp.

Summer could be treacherous in this country; if you were not careful, you could die of heatstroke.

How about we continue our conversation in the veranda? The air is cooler outside and the damn air conditioner hasn’t been fixed yet. His words weren’t a request but more of a command. The man was slightly limping while walking out of the house. There were also accompanying grumbles about how the service was slow and he already called the repair shop two days ago.

The interviewer also closely followed the older man, bringing a notepad and pen.

True to his word, the breeze that greeted them soothed away the warmness. There were a lot of trees surrounding the small abode. Despite the hot temperature, it was very cool in the veranda. The couches were all made from bamboo and there were cushions on top, making them comfortable to sit on.

As I was saying... Liz was a beautiful girl but I was stupidly shy around her. It didn’t help that she liked another man, someone who was very different from me. It was puppy love. For a moment, he sighed before continuing. Don’t get me wrong, I love Louis. I very much love him but at first, I never thought that I was gay. Gilbert became quiet. His eyes directly looked into the interviewer’s. After a few seconds, he continued speaking. I was known as Gilbert McDermott, Commander of a US Navy Warship. The name of the ship is irrelevant. Back then, promotions frequently happened which is why I was able to have my position. I don’ know why but it seemed that I was always assigned to where the action was happening. There was a bit of mockery and sarcasm at how Gilbert stated it but he was also laughing quietly.

Wars are always hellish I tell you. I didn’t expect that I would make it out alive. I... Well, let’s skip that gloomy part for now. I should probably begin talking from the very beginning of all this. Gilbert’s eyes looked into the distance. He wasn’t focusing on anything particular. He looked as if he was watching his life rewind before his eyes.

    Part Two

Gilbert McDermott is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. McDermott. The maternal side of Gilbert was originally from Prussia before they immigrated to the United States. This was before the time of the Great War. His grandfather, Theodor Herder, used to be a professor at a university in Konigsberg, which is present day, Kaliningrad. There is not much left of the current city that reflected Konigsberg. Theodor had one daughter, named Sofia.

Franz McDermott was a seafarer from Cleveland after he was honorably dismissed from the military. His prior work experience allowed him to rise through the ranks very quickly. Gilbert’s paternal grandparents were also from a military background but he never personally met them.

From what Gilbert was told, his father met his mother during one of his trips. The ship that was captained by Mr. McDermott was going to dock in Florida. While Franz was buying in the flea market, he encountered Sofia. Franz was the first one to initiate a casual conversation which ended with both of them exchanging their contact details. Every time his father would be in Florida, he would meet his soon to be wife. After months of courting and dating, the two then married. A year after the marriage, Gilbert was born.

Before the Second World War could reach its disastrous effect in the United States, Franz was called back into the army. The patriarch of the family was going to be deployed to Europe as part of what President Roosevelt called as, arsenal of democracy for the war efforts.

Rather than waiting to be drafted, Gilbert enlisted himself to the navy. His mother was crying because it was heartbreaking for her. Sofia was afraid to lose both her husband and son to the war. If she would make the decisions herself, she would make the family stay together than go to the accursed war.

Don’t worry mom. I’ll definitely return alive. Maybe I’ll even met dad. Gilbert goofily smiled. He didn’t like seeing his mother crying. Life was very difficult during these times. Everyone was on their toes; there were no major cities that were bombed but there were constant drills. This put some people on the edge. His mother was one of the people who fell into this category.

Gilbert didn’t say goodbye to Liz, his pretty neighbor and childhood friend. His crush was going to get married once the war was over. This was
