    Foreword

In 2003, the headmaster of a small regional secondary school in Great Britain stood up to address the 16 year-olds who had just recently finished their exams. Among the things the school head was famous for was his dramatic pauses when he addressed the school’s student body. One phrase in particular stuck in my mind, which I’ve taken the courtesy of marking in true presentation teacher style, with pauses :

you’ll go // out there // and make the future leaders // of tomorrow

He rounded off this delivery with a longer pause accompanied with a ponderous look on his face, to add to the effect. The effect it had on the teenage crowd was to elicit that type of giggle that you try so hard to keep in, that ends out coming out as half splutter.

I find myself thinking back to that speech and a smile creeps back onto my face, until I think of how clearly I remembered the words he said and suddenly it all clicks in my mind. I’m highly doubtful I would have remembered them 14 years later had they not been delivered with so much poise and polish.

Today more than ever there’s a need to present yourself, and despite the rise of various forms of writer synchronous and asynchronous communication, the oral tradition of presenting still plays an important role. The skill of presenting stretches far beyond my headmaster’s school assembly domain as well - in a meeting, networking at a social event, pitching a product, speaking to guests at a dinner, introducing yourself or speaking in a telecon, or telling everyone about yourself at the start of a language course all draw upon the presentation skill. Just as the presenting stretches beyond a presentation, so too does teaching it beyond the input and practice of set phrases. Teachers are tasked with much more than preparing the future leaders of tomorrow to say after that we’ll be turning to… because instead of being comfortable with language, presenters need to be comfortable with the art of elocution.

These skills can be practiced and honed. But teachers need hacks. A hack is a broad term that includes anything that covers the tricks and shortcuts, not usually the most obvious ones, that make life easier.

As Phil exemplifies in such depth, presentation hacks help students hone their presenting skills valuable to them beyond the classic format of the talk in front of a crowd. Drawing from rich and diverse experiences and backing it up with tried and tested activity formats, he provides an essential overview for your methods and approaches bag of tricks that will help students become markedly more effective in their delivery. Equipped with this, teachers will have a broad catalogue of tools to tackle the presentation skill holistically.
