One strong woman sticks up for everyone, conquers the challenges along the way, and defends one young girl with a mysterious and troubled past. At their last stop in Nebraska, the leader of the wagon train faces justice, and the remaining women, their new lives.
The bumping of the wagon under Tessa jolted her awake. She tried to remember where she was and why she was in a wagon but the pain in her head clouded her mind. She tried to force her eyes open to take a look around but her head hurt too much and she slipped back into unconsciousness. The only thing she could grasp before everything faded into black was the thought that she wasn’t alone.
Voices talking over her head brought Tessa back to her senses. She knew they were talking about her but she couldn’t understand why. It felt like she’d been asleep for a very long time and she couldn’t move her body or even open her eyes. The pain in her head had dulled to a pounding ache. She felt someone gently lift her head and run a damp rag across her mouth. It made her realize just how thirsty she was and she wondered how long it had been since she’d had a drink of water. She fell back to sleep.
Graves watched the women climb down from the wagons. He didn’t like stopping out here on the prairie too often. Traveling with women wasn’t much to his liking anyway and being a nursemaid to a bunch of them didn’t sit well with him. He wouldn’t take a job like this if it weren’t for the money.
Despite being stuck with the women, he and his partners stood to make a handsome pile of loot once the trip was completed. They’d figured out how to be paid on both ends by charging the mail order brides and the prospective bridegrooms. By keeping their expenses to the minimum, all that money went right into their pockets. He figured the women best get used to hardship anyway as life out on the frontier offered up plenty of it.
He had ordered his men to set up a perimeter and keep watch while the women stretched their legs and tended to their personal business. Some of the men were crude and the women had quickly learned to keep their distance. Graves was amused and relieved, as he didn’t want any more trouble than necessary. The men were under strict orders to keep their own distance but that didn’t stop them from making rude remarks.
Graves was disturbed as he took a headcount of the women. He was still missing one and he knew if she didn’t wake up soon they’d be burying her out here on the lone prairie and he’d be denied that extra bit of profit. He figured he’d better go take another look at her condition.
Maddie saw Graves heading towards the wagon and she hurried to intercept him. He scowled when he saw what she was doing. Her concern for the young girl inside the wagon, however, was far greater than her fear of Mr. Graves. Somebody needed to take a stand against him. He’d already proven himself to be a bully and a lout. She reached the back of the wagon at the same time as he did and stopped in front of him.
Mr. Graves,
Maddie said stiffly.
Step out of the way, ma’am,
Graves said this with an air of exaggeration meant to be sarcastic.
His tone wasn’t lost on Maddie. She straightened her back and looked him right in the eye. He stared back at her with a baleful look on his face but she didn’t back down. He looked up and noticed his men were watching carefully from their posts. He knew he’d better take charge of this woman’s insolence right away or he’d be a laughingstock among his own men.
He also knew he didn’t want to be too heavy handed with the women or he risked them trying to run off or involve any authorities they might encounter along the way. He had enough problems with the one lying unconscious inside the wagon. He almost regretted the deal he’d made with her drunken old man, but it was too late for regrets now. They were nearly a hundred miles from her pappy’s rundown place. He wasn’t going to take her back. He decided to try a sympathetic stance with the woman.
