    Chapter One

After the darkness came the light.

Graham’s eyes flickered open slowly, the uncomfortable burn of overhead tungsten strips causing him to wince and take stock of where he was. He could hear voices, the trundle of wheels on concrete floors - but it was the smell that caused his brain to engage and figure out he had ended up in a hospital bed. It was the smell of medication and disinfectant. The smell of illness. The smell of death.

Ah, you’re awake at last. You’re a very, very lucky man, Mr Hart.

He turned to see the slightly overweight man in an ill-fitting suit beside his bed. Who are you? Graham murmured.

I’m Dr Watson, the man replied.

Graham sniggered. Elementary, he smiled. Solved any mysteries lately?

Very funny. How original. At least you haven’t lost your sense of humour, Mr Hart.

Graham rubbed his eyes. What happened? Did I have a heart attack?

The doctor shook his head. Thankfully, no. But you did have the mother of all angina attacks. A real monster. If I’m honest, I’d say you were a gnat’s pube away from a full-on cardiac arrest. We wouldn’t be having this chat if you had.

A gnat’s pube? Graham winced. Christ, what kind of doctor are you?

What can I say, Mr Hart? I’m a no-bullshit kind of guy. You’ve had a very, very serious wake-up call here.

    When can I leave?

Hold your horses, big guy. We need to do an ECG first and check the extent of your coronary disease.

Graham sat up. Coronary disease? You said it was angina.

It was, but that can be an indicator of a serious narrowing of the arteries. Might not, too, but we need to rule it out.

What else could have caused it?

Could be many factors. Physical exertion, stress, a dodgy meal…

Stress, Graham interrupted. Trust me, it’s that. I’m stressed to fucking bits at the moment.

Fine. But we need to rule everything out, so you’ll be staying here a few days at least.

I can’t. I need to find my wife…there’s so much I need to talk to her about.

The doctor smiled. Don’t worry. She found you.

Graham turned to see Jane standing in the doorway, tears rolling down her beautiful face.
