    Translator’s Note from the 2013 Edition

    The Etí Atí is one of a rare category of pseudonymous cryptotexts—books written in an completely unknown language. The most famous of these, the Voynich manuscript, was purchased by Wildrid Voynich in 1912. The manuscript dated from the sixteenth century, and was decorated with brilliant illustrations of exotic flora. All attempts at deciphering the script defied cryptologists.

    The Etí Atí appeared in circulation a year later, in 1913. Like the Voynich manuscript, it was written in an unknown script, and illuminated with inks of various hues. The unique property of the cryptotext was its use of different colors to represent vowel sounds. It was purchased in Bucharest by an American collector, Mildred Foster. Believing it to be of Hebrew or Persian, perhaps dating to the Babylonian period of the Jewish Exile, she brought it to James Darmesteter, the translator of the Vendidad. He believed it may have been of Tibetan or Thai origin, but other than that was unable to help her. Mrs.
