    About the Author

    Preface

When I became a chaplain for hospice I was required to go through an in-house training program to prepare for my new position. I learned what hospice was about, how the rules regulated what we could talk about, how to keep safe when dealing with people with a contagious disease. They told me what I could and couldn’t do in a home and a lot of other details that often felt irrelevant. The training took a few weeks interspersed with calls in which I shadowed staff members so I would understand how the other disciplines worked. It was a good combination of training and experience.

Training was the key in preparing me to do a proper job. That training with experienced staff cut the learning curve, so one can come up to speed more quickly and avoid some of the pitfalls of the learning process.

In the same way, new Christians need help to assist them in living the Christian life, to learn how to relate to others, and how to stand for, as well as defend their faith. It’s not just about being a Christian, but becoming Christian in our lifestyle that is so important. To accomplish this growth a Christian needs to know how to intentionally develop a pattern of actions that develop growth in their faith, maintain a relationship with God and sustain meaningful relationships with others. They also need to understand who they are in this new relationship with God, and that they are part of a new family, God’s family. The young Christian needs to know how to overcome sin and learn how to serve. The ultimate reality for the Christian is laying hold of the other-world values and motivation in this current sinful world.

This book gives an overview of essential components need to gain understanding to live out the Christian life. Along with the brief teaching on specific areas, there are also recommendations of books, websites and podcasts that can help you become even more proficient in that area of your Christian life.

That will acquire new thoughts to explore in your study of God's word. The books' design is to suggest a plan for the direction you need to develop your faith. May this book help you understand God more fully, and as a result love God more deeply in your journey of faith. Your Faith: Personal and Practical

    Introduction

Where are you in your walk with Christ? Are you a new or young Christian? Perhaps you have been a Christian for a while and now want to take your faith seriously. I offer you essential information to help you grow and think through your faith. This book is a compilation of articles and handouts I put together over the years to help others understand what is vital to the faith, and how to put into practice the teachings of their faith.

Some people will shrink away from doing some of the assignments I present in this book. It is because they don’t think they should have to work to grow in their faith. Can you really grow in your faith without some work on your part? People pay good money to go to college, and work hard to learn a profession. What good does it do to learn how to make a living, but not learn how to live? You want to earn a good living so you can reap greater benefits and rewards in life. Studying to grow in your faith will give you rewards in your relationship and walk with God and people, and help you live in a productive way that you will gain rewards in heaven. God offers a variety of rewards, also called crowns, because of different aspects of faithful living. Do you want God to honor and recognize your faithfulness one day? I sure do. Follow me as we walk together on this path of faithful growth and service.

A Christian should want to learn as much as possible about their faith. That includes knowing what you believe as well as why you believe. A biblical basis is essential for making decisions and setting spiritual direction that will help you progress in your faith. It is also important to know how to stand up for what you believe. Getting a better perception of where you want to go in your faith helps focus your desire on improving your understanding. God is very open in His desire for you to grow in your faith.

2 Peter 1:5-10 "Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble."

1 Timothy 6:11-12 "But you, man of God, flee these things, and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you confessed the good confession in the sight of many witnesses. 17 Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on the living God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;"

1 Timothy 6:18-19 "...that they do good, that they be rich in good works, that they be ready to distribute, willing to communicate; laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of eternal life."

Paul is calling his readers to Lay hold of eternal life. This is a command telling believers to take what has been given to us and make it ours. The question is this, what does it mean to take hold of eternal life if one is already saved? If one is saved they already have eternal life. So what does it mean to take hold of eternal life?

Let me illustrate it in this way. Suppose that you inherited 5,000 acres of farm land. This land is very valuable. It has rich soil, it is well drained and has an effective irrigation system, and thus it has the potential to make lots of money. The inheritance includes all the equipment needed to farm the land. However, you have never farmed and you don’t know what to do. You don’t know what crops you will plant, and neither do you don’t know how to run the machinery. Some of the tractors and harvesters are so large they intimidate you. You can’t do this alone. You need advice in what to plant, when to plant it, how to plant the crops, how to harvest it and where to sell it. You need someone to show you how to use the equipment and maintain it. You feel absolutely overwhelmed, but you want to take on the challenge.

As you contemplate doing this, do you think you will make mistakes? Will you do some things wrong along the way? Do you think you might even damage the equipment while learning? What do you think will help you? It is getting in there and doing it. Learning how to prepare the soil, plant, harvest and sell the product. You have to work on doing something every day and the more experience you get the better you will become until it becomes second nature to you.

To lay hold of eternal life is similar to the illustration. You have been given a life rich with resources from God. See chapter 13 on the resources God gives every Christian. God doesn’t want you to just possess these qualities. He wants you to daily put them into practice. To lay hold of eternal life means that you learn how to use your gifts, talents and abilities to serve the Lord. You learn how to harvest the rich treasurers of God’s word to guide your life. You will learn how to walk in the Spirit, and live in relationship with Him. As you give your heart to God you’ll learn to love Him and take His message to the world. To lay hold of eternal life is to understand your resources and put it into practice. When your faith is attacked you need to seek refuge in God and stand strong for your faith. When God gives you material resources use them to serve him and help others. When you face difficulties in life learn how to trust in God’s love and believe that He really does have a plan for you. Using these resources helps you become proficient in living out your faith.

It means you need to know what you believe.

It means you need to learn how to mine the resources found in the depths of God’s word.

It means you seek to understand the issues of the day so you can expose error and stand for the truth as well as stand against those who hate and oppose God and His ways.

It means you learn how to maintain your faith so that you deal with sin and learn how to make your weak areas strong and to stand strong in the midst of trials.

It means you learn how to express your faith in your daily life at home, school or work and in your neighborhood.

It means you learn how to discern the error in the world and the deceptive ways of Satan.

It means your learn how to develop and maintain relationships with God and people.

Paul expresses this thought in Philippians 2:12, "So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." Notice he does not say work for your salvation, but the salvation you have received by faith, is to be worked out... to be expressed... to be lived in daily life. Many want the Christian life to be automatic and requiring no effort on our part to bring them to maturity. Too bad that’s not true, for it takes work and commitment to develop the kind of godly life God called all believers to experience.

The Writer of Hebrews reinforces this teaching that we need to take responsibility for the direction of our life. You have to decide if you want to be a milk-Christian or a meat-Christian. That means you choose between being Peter Pan who wants to remain a child or be like Jesus Christ who demonstrated the maturity God wants to see developed in each of us. Read the following passage every day for a week and ask yourself which kind of Christian you want to be. To be a meat-Christian demands work and dedication on your behalf and that is what I want to help you accomplish in this book. It just takes time and consistency to develop.

Hebrews 5:11-6:3 "About him we have many words to say, and hard to interpret, seeing you have become dull of hearing. For although by this time you should be teachers, you again need to have someone teach you the
