Once they graduate, will their forbidden love survive?

Introduction to the series:
Hello, Dearest Reader. This story takes place between parts 1 and 2 of Educating Autumn though this story stands alone and can be read without any previous knowledge of the world so feel free to skip ahead to chapter one if you don't have much interest in the world After the Explosion. For those who are interested in the basics of the world, this is for you.
World War III broke out worldwide after a terrorist attack. As the world fought with new weapons, the Earth suffered. The Nations of Allied Scientist for Peace (NASP) decided that the only way to save the human race was to destroy most of the world's human population. They put one thousand people underground to continue the human race. They were sealed in underground vaults for one hundred years.
Once humans emerged again, three main countries formed.
Josiathan became a patriarchal society with strict rules and social norms.
Pacifican became a matriarchal society which was known for aggressiveness.
Retois became a society in love with knowledge and art where very few laws or social norms governed.
Chapter 1
This is Brianna. The girl you are going to marry,
his father said.
Joel stared at the girl. She looked to be about five years younger than him. She had pronounced hips, large breasts, and fair skin that had only a few red spots.
She was dark haired with dark eyelashes that accentuated brown eyes. Like any proper girl, she kept her eyes averted to the ground. They were standing outside of her home with her father and her oldest brother. Joel didn't know either man well.
His former classmates had commented on Brianna's looks. They had made all kinds of obscene suggestions about her. In truth, they had made similar suggestions about most of the women of Fernville, including Joel's own sisters.
Joel had never had a single obscene thought about a girl. Instead of the feelings Brianna would have undoubtedly inspired in his former classmates, Joel felt only sinking in the pit of his stomach.
How do you do?
he asked politely. She had as little say in their current situation as he did. Likely, she was as terrified of their union as he was.
How do you do?
Her voice was soft and demure.
We'll arrange for the wedding as soon as my boy gets back from Retois,
Joel's father said patting Joel on the shoulder. Joel would be leaving the next week. His father would take him in the wagon to Baston, the nearest port town. From there, he would board a ship which would take him to Retois. Then, he would have four years of University during which he wouldn't have to give Brianna a thought.
As long as you pay for her in advance, we have a deal,
Brianna's father said.
Of course, I will bring payment for her next week,
Joel's father said.
The fathers shook hands while Joel and Brianna stared at each other. Joel had never spoken to the girl before today. He wouldn't have known who she was except that their families attended the central church in Fernville. He knew nothing about who she was. He didn't know her habits or dislikes, and more importantly, he had no interest in learning.
Joel's father shoved him towards the wagon, which was hitched to two bay mares. It wasn't a hard shove, but it sent the message. Apparently, his father had noted his discomfort and wanted him in the wagon before he said something that might jeopardize the match he had made. Joel obediently climbed onto the wagon and waited for his father to be seated beside him.
She's very...young,
Joel said once they had traveled a fair distance from Brianna's home. He hadn't wanted to be overheard. He had no wish to offend the poor girl.
She will be old enough to marry once you return,
his father assured. That was probably true, but it still wouldn't solve the bigger issue of her being a female.
I just..
Joel wasn't sure what he should say. He decided to close his mouth and sit silently instead. His shoulders slumped and he stared at his shoes. It took him several moments to realize that his father had driven the wagon past their house and to a spot
