MEET THE BLACKS
Janet Black sits on a Saturday morning reviewing her sentencing recommendations for a criminal case she has just prosecuted. Contrary to public perception more black females are empowering themselves.
Janet takes a sip of coffee, considering. She is one half of the prosecution team, and she is relieved not to have her weekend consumed by the case. She finishes her thought. To some people, anyone different is a stop sign, and that’s where their horizon ends.
Who said that? Sounds wise,
Paul Black says as he looks up from the newspaper.
You did, and you know it,
Janet says. Paul laughs. It is indeed one of his trademark sayings.
Paul and Janet are African Americans who are deeply in love and have a satisfying marriage. Paul is a structural engineer and Janet is a criminal lawyer. Even though, Janet is strong-willed she prefers that Paul takes charge and lead the family. Although, two of their three children have grown up and left the house, Janet still wants Paul to be the wise family patriarch. However, she will sometimes take over because she is opinionated and has a low tolerance for nonsense. Paul is outgoing and family-oriented. When he’s not consulting on city projects, he likes to spend free evenings organizing cookouts and outings to the movies or sporting events with his family, or, if he can get away with it, touring the historic architecture of the city, which is his hobby. However, he adores his sexy wife and children above all else. He just couldn’t envision himself with any other woman.
Janet and Paul look with pride at the family photos arranged in an artful puzzle-piece, and appreciate the smiling faces of their three children, Maurice, Michelle and Marlon.
Maurice, in his early thirties, is a mechanical engineer and has a beautiful half-Italian wife named Vanessa, and a young son named Cristiano. His son’s photos show him as a cute multiracial toddler.
Michelle Black, who is in her late twenties, has a thriving life. She has a successful dental practice and is engaged to an African-American real estate developer and nightclub owner; Hayden Carter, whose parents, Cheryl and Isaac, are extremely wealthy. Michelle is one of the States’ top dentists and is a part-time model. Her passion is really fashion.
Marlon Black’s grade school photo shows off his talents playing the piano, but as far as his parents know, he has not settled on a career interest or decided on a college. However, he has enrolled in some online courses. Marlon respects his parents and always tries to please them.
Marlon is bringing his blonde girlfriend Chelsea to Michelle’s wedding rehearsal,
Paul tells Janet. Try to be nice.
Paul knows Marlon has been dating Chelsea, the daughter of English immigrants, for some time now. Marlon likes to confide in his father about girls. He’s usually embarrassed to talk to his mother about them, especially in this case.
What do we know about this girl?
Janet frowns. And are we sure she’s his girlfriend? I thought they just went out once or twice.
They’re dating,
Paul assures her. You can see that whenever she’s around.
As a biracial person Paul knows the pain of not being accepted. Paul’s mother was disowned by her family for marrying a black man.
Janet shakes her head. They are so different.
We’re different, honey,
Paul says. Even though, I am classified as black
.
I can’t believe he’s fallen for her,
Janet says, her expression troubled. "You have got to talk to him. She is distracting him from being
