    Prologue

Dev Walker didn’t believe in happy endings. He’d always been the optimist, the voice of conscience and reason. The better man, his brothers called it, because one of them had to play the role.

Men who didn’t flinch from getting their hands dirty, whose list of sins kept piling on top of each other, didn’t deserve redemption. Dev knew that for a fact. He liked to believe that maybe, if he worked hard at his part, it might become reality someday. Took Dev some time to realize all he was doing was deceiving himself, when everyone else knew the truth he avoided all these years.

Dev, Kal, and Van did whatever was needed for Jax Starr, their former alpha, without giving a shit about the consequences. After escaping from a broken home, Jax gave them the wolf bite and a home. He trained them to be the best at killing. Back then they didn’t know the full weight of the payback Jax demanded. Only a matter of time before the past came bearing down on him.

After Jax died, Dev, Kal and Van decided to follow their mentor and only decent friend, Reed Williams, to the town of New Haven. Hoped to start afresh and live life as opposed to taking it. Living, in Dev’s estimation, proved to be much harder than dying. Evidence enough in the way the other wolves stayed clear of him in his first New Haven pack meeting.

Ignoring the secret looks and whispers from the other men and women he passed by, Dev made his way to the plastic seats at the back of the town’s only gym. Carlos Medina, their new alpha, used to hold meetings at his house, but when he took in more members, he decided they needed a bigger place.

Dev used to think Carlos was one hard bastard, but changed his mind when Carlos risked his life to challenge Jax, protect his town and pack, and reclaim Reed as his mate. Standing beside Carlos in front of the rented space, Reed shot Dev a nod. At least one person wanted him here, which didn’t count for a lot. Dev suspected Reed was the sole reason why Carlos let Kal, Van and he move in. That, and the extra muscle they could provide.

Seeing the other two seats empty, Dev silently cursed.
