    Chapter 1

Like the year before, Kodiak shifter Winter hid between two ash trees. Despite his massive size, Winter was close to invisible, unseen. The color of his pelt complimented the clumps of falling snow, the monochromic landscape.

A snowflake fell on his nose. Cold. The gray clouds made it hard to tell what time of the day it was, but it didn’t matter. His heart leapt when the glass door of the house opened, revealing Dustin’s younger brother.

Winter wished he could say the young man looked like Dustin’s replica, but he wasn’t.

Riley had a thick puffy winter coat on and snow boots. It was cold today, but Winter’s fur kept him warm. Same bright blue eyes and same shade of dark hair, but he was slender where Dustin was made of muscle.

Riley was also completely human. Vulnerable. Breakable. Unlike Dustin, who had a powerful grizzly inside of him, dominant enough to take Winter’s fearsome Kodiak.

He knew the guy’s name of course, but Winter decided it was better to refer to Riley as Dustin’s brother. Better for both of them. He stopped seeing Riley as Dustin’s younger brother a long time ago.

Winter ought to leave, to amble back to where he stashed his car on the side of the road, get dressed and drive the fuck out of there. But he made Dustin a promise before he died.

    Watch out for Riley.

Plus, the Knox family was one of the shelter’s largest sponsors. Without their yearly donation, the Second Chances shelter for lost shifters would have closed down a long time ago.

Winter should head back, attend that important meeting Morgan and Jace kept reminding him about. When he and his two best friends opened up Second Chances, they made a promise to keep it running as long as they could.
