Chapter 1
James murmured in disbelief after unlocking the door to the General Store and stepping into a room so filthy it looked like animals had taken over. The floor was not only dusty, but dirty with a smell of garbage and dead things. A sliding mark indicated that something had been dragged across the dirt into the next room. Of all the houses in White Falls, this was the first that truly felt abandoned.
Kali clutched his arm, standing just behind him. Her voice wavered, Let's go back.
The buildings are the last place we have to look.
James thought it likely that John and Amy ran off together. It was getting late and he just wanted to get the last few buildings searched before sundown.
It stinks in here. Are you really going to clean all this?
Looking at the filth in disbelief, Kali held her arms close to her body, as if she might accidentally touch something in the room.
I have to.
The windows had been boarded up and the light was dim. James turned on his flashlight and wished he hadn't. The light fell on a black stain smeared along the wall.
Something died in here.
Kali was scared. She'd spent the whole day looking for John and Amy while James cleaned the yellow house at the edge of town. Something felt wrong here at a gut level. Seriously wrong. She couldn't nail down what it was, maybe the awful stench.
