    Chapter 1

James Sewald scanned the job board for anything that would get him through the summer.  It was that or live in misery until the next school year, sharing a room with his little brother and helping to babysit four siblings.  His options were limited.  Two janitorial postings, historical society groundskeeper, or cafeteria work.  The groundskeeper job sounded interesting at least.  He bet there were a hundred applicants.

He was a college kid, dark hair with handsome features, ice blue eyes that sometimes looked gray with the right shirt.  Not that he was flush with women, but he had one and that was enough.

Scribbling the contact name and number on a notepad, James shut the cover to his laptop just as the door to his dorm room burst open. Miles threw his pack on the floor and his notebook bag on the desk. One more final. I thought the school year would never end.

Miles was one of the fortunate students with a parental free ride.  Not that he earned it with hard work or good grades.  He was an only child. His father was an oncologist and his mother a CPA which meant he had money for college.  James sighed, "I have to find a job.  One week isn't enough time."

You're not alone with the rough start to summer.  I found out today that Dad loaned out the cabin to Aunt Liz. Me and Amy were going to spend a week there, get to know each other better. Miles forced a suave smile.  It didn't quite work. All the money in the world couldn't change his awkward social skills.  But he had money, and Amy liked to be taken care of.
