Chapter One
Where did the years go? What happened to the man I married? Where did the children go that lived in our home? I hardly know the man I shared my life with. He’s older now, sometimes frail and sickly. His frame is no longer strong and muscular. He looks older than his age He has worked hard since he was a young man. He rarely took time for himself. He just wanted to keep his family happy’ It seems that our children don’t have the time to spend with us. They really don’t talk to us that often anymore. Their lives are busy. They have families of their own. I understand this, it happens to parents. It’s just hard to let go.
We are one of those American families that have worked hard all our lives for what we have. We rarely asked for help from other people. Maybe we should have. It seems like even though you work hard, you don’t get ahead. You barely make it. There are weeks you wonder how are we going to do it? How are we going to get by?
When we were young, our dreams were big. We thought about opening a new business. We were going to make such a big success of it. Little did we know when you live in New York State, you really don’t have much of a chance to make it. Unless you were rich to start with, dreams fade fast.
When Gene and I met, we were both working at a large chain hotel. I had heard through my boss, that Gene had wanted to ask me out, but didn’t know how I would react if he asked. So Jane was to feel me out. She wanted to know if I would consider it. I had not really thought of going out with Gene or anyone for that matter. He should know that I had just recently broken off will the guy I was dating. This guy Gene knew nothing about me. Before I would even think about dating him, he should know a little bit about me. He should know that I had just broken off with someone. That I have been divorced, and I have two small boys. It’s a lot of baggage to want to date. I thought Gene was kind of immature, I had much more responsibilities then he. He may think I’m not worth it. I told Jane she needed to let him know. Then he could make up his mind.
Jane did just as I asked. This information didn’t seem to discourage him. He asked me out the next day. He was young and full of life not a care in the world. We went out that night. I was nervous. How should I act? What should I wear? I sounded like a teenager going on her first date.
Come to find out Gene wasn’t concerned with looks. We talked the whole evening, found out many things about each other. I found myself feeling really at ease. I didn’t have to put on any pretense with Gene. He was very attentive. He was always holding my hand, putting his arm around me. I liked him. I didn’t think I would. I surprised myself.
We kept seeing each other. We became best friends. We were exclusive. We would stay at his apartment, smoked some weed, and listen to mellow music. It was a wonderful time in our lives. Soon Gene introduced me to his family and his friends. Gene’s brothers and his friends were really nice. I made friends with most of them. His friends became my friends. I also made a few close friends of my own. Gene’s mom, she didn’t like me very much. , most likely because I was divorced and had two small children. I didn’t care. I didn’t need her to like me. Gene was all that mattered, although I could understand where she was coming from.
Gene and I spent so much time together we decided that we should move in together. The boys were in love with him. The four of us would do many outings. The boys seem to need this. They never had much of the family life together as one unit. It seems like we were never a part. I didn’t tell my family about the arrangement. I thought it might be best to wait. Gene however did tell his family. We set up house in the three bedroom apartment. Everything was really coming together. The boys were enrolled in school. I started a new job at a local restaurant.
