    Profitable Hog Raising

Hog-raising with proper care and management is one of the best sources of farm income. To grow hogs profitably it is essential to give careful thought to the selection of sow mothers and sires, and to feed and management of the sow and her litter—also to provide warm, dry and economical shelter and sanitary hog-lots. Poor ancestry, neglect of swine by housing in cold, damp buildings and improper feeding in filth, waste grain and invite disease. Too frequently, also, such conditions result in unprofitable pork production.

SWINE IMPROVEMENT. Obtaining big, useful sows that will raise big litters of good pigs is the first step in successful hog-raising. Selecting the best sows and using good sires improve the swine. The profit of the hog grower lies in producing pork cheaply. Large sized, thriving hogs are raised more cheaply when mothers and sires come from big, flourishing hog families.

SANITATION. Unhealthful conditions in hog-lots and buildings cause an enormous loss annually. Sunshine kills germs and dries the house; its value is recognized by the most successful hog raisers. Let the Sunshine in. Drinking and eating in filth cause worms, scours, sore mouths and cholera.

FEEDING AND MANAGEMENT. Feeding, care and management of the sow and her litter are important. Plenty of good water, mineral mixtures, green and protein feeds, grains and milk make hogs gain rapidly in weight. Self-feeders, clean feeding floors and disease-free lots and pastures will save grain and prevent losses through sickness.

GOOD BUILDINGS. Providing swine with warm, dry, comfortable and economical buildings is the final step. Warm houses during cold weather save feed. Cold, damp houses cause chilling and loss of little pigs, and invite disease. Cool houses and shade in summer aid growth.

PLANS FOR DOUGLAS FIR HOUSES and other information presented in the following pages will assist in growing hogs more profitably. An extensive study of hog-farm conditions throughout the United States and Canada has been made, from which the practical plans of hog buildings and equipment shown in this booklet have been prepared. Each plan combines good appearance, utility of arrangement and
