The cat did not belong to me but I loved it nonetheless. It was grey and orange striped, and the biggest green eyes you have ever seen. She always let me pick her up and my mom thought she must be a pet of our neighbors. In secret, I would call her Kitty PussPuss. Sometimes I would bring her inside the house and hide her in my room. That never last long because my mom would always catch me giggling or hear the cat meow.
It was just another one of those days, a Saturday. My mom had caught me in my room with the neighborhood cat, and shooed us out of the house. Even though it was still summer and my second grade year would not start for several more weeks, it was a cloudy and dreary sort of day. My mom had complained about the unseasonable weather all week. I didn’t mind the clouds, as long as it didn’t rain. Cats hate rain, you know.
I did not like playing with the cat outside as much because she was sneaky and always found a way to get away from me. She slipped under the fence and started running away as if we were not the best of friends. I walked out into the alley, lined with the backsides of everyone’s houses; most of our neighbors had detached garages where they parked their cars. It rained the night before and the ground was still damp from the downpour, hours later. It smelled like pine trees, refuse and gravel. I tried to quiet my steps as I searched for my feline friend, but I knew however quiet I was being, the cat could hear me
