Reviews of the “Study It” Series/

"It’s obviously an amazing learning tool” - Canada AM, National Morning Show

Study "It": English as a Second Language series is an engaging textbook for teaching non-native English speakers. It takes advantage of the format to include video and audio in a way that supports the lessons and never feels added on as an "enhancement." The textbook uses a number of different assessment formats to allow users to test themselves throughout the book and see their scores. The book even uses the Note function effectively for long-form answers. While the content of the book is challenging, it makes learning grammar easy and fun. - 2015 Digital Book Award Review

“The Study It textbooks are a set of interactive English language multi-touch textbooks that are a fraction of the cost of a paper textbook” - Digital Journal

The Study It ESL textbook series has been awarded the QED Certification. The QED stands for Quality, Excellence, Design. It is the seal of approval of ebooks and enhanced books. All recipients of the QED have passed a thorough, independent 13-point quality assurance test. - QED Panel

    2. Write a brief description of your place.

    3. Talk about your expectations and rules for your place.

    Learn it! Future Tenses

Watch the Video explanation here: http://www.studyitbooks.com/5_1_keynote.html

There are many different ways to talk about the future tense in English. In this unit, you will practice every single different future tense! Answer the discussion questions below with your partners, then, look at the examples on the right. Can you use all of the future tenses?

    1. What are your plans for tonight?

    2. What are you going to do this weekend?

    3. What are your plans for the next five years?

    4. What do you want to accomplish by the time you are 60 years old?

    Future Simple

    Promise

    • A decision I make right now and tell people about

    I will make dinner tonight.

    Affirmation

    • A spontaneous (in the moment) offer to help

    I’ll make dinner tonight.

The Future Simple is used in a number of situations. One of these is when the speaker plans on doing something voluntarily (we say, by their ‘will’).

If the contracted form is used (‘ll), it gives us a feeling of informality. We also use the contracted form to indicate that this sentence is actually a communication of a decision made just at the moment of speaking. This is what we refer to as a spontaneous decision.

    Time Expressions

Use these Time Expressions with the Future Simple.

    Tomorrow

I will clean up the house tomorrow, I swear.

    Next

    I’ll do it next week.

    In _____

I’ll finish the project in two days.

    Later

    I’ll do it later.

    I’ll do it later tonight.

Write a short dialogue with your partner.

Student A - You are a mother. You work all day and all night. You need your son to clean up the house.

Student B - You are the son. You want your mother to stop bothering you. Make promises and offers to get her to get out of your room!

*** As the auxiliary verb comes first in the question form, there is no way to use the contraction.

The first example shows us a person who very strongly says what he/she does NOT want to do. The second example shows us how to make a prediction about what another person will not do (in the speaker’s opinion).

    Future Continuous

The Future Continuous is used to express actions that will be happening at a specific time in the future. The focus is on the action. Here are the uses:

    1. To express an action that we know will be happening in the future, which will be interrupted.

I’ll be sleeping when you get in after work, so please try to be quiet.

    2. To express two or more actions happening at the same time in the future.

Dinner tonight with friends? Well, I’ll be working and the kids are going to be studying for their test.

    3. To express that an action began, is still happening and will continue after a specific time in the future.

I won’t be able to come to your wedding as I’ll be flying back from Europe that same day.

    Calendar

Make a specific, interesting plan for each night between 5pm-midnight. Then, try to make plans to watch a movie with your classmate during the week. Find a time that works for both of you and schedule it in.

Candice: Are you free on Wednesday at 8pm?

Josiane: No, sorry. At 8pm I’ll be eating dinner with Bunmi.

Note that we can use either WILL or GOING TO with very little difference, if any, in the meaning. What’s important is that we have the verb BE together with another verb in the ING form.

Future Perfect I will have left by then

Use the Future Perfect Tense to

    • talk about something that will be finished before a specific future time or event;

    • make a prediction about smth that will not be finished at a specific time in the future.

You can change the order of your information without any real difference in meaning.

He will have finished his homework by the time you get home.
