Introduction to Essay Writing

What is Essay?
The word essay is derived from the Latin word exagium
which means to present one’s case. In other words, an essay is a short piece of writing through which you share your story, experience, or your side of the argument.
Think of essays as an important form of communication. As children, we talk in single words because our young brain is capable of handling only one or two items at a time. As we grow up, we use short sentences followed by longer, more complete sentences. Now imagine someone asking you to tell about the best day of your life in one word or one sentence. That would be extremely difficult to do. But if someone asks you to write an essay about it, you will have no problem telling about the best day of your life. Similarly, if you want to teach your friends how a bicycle works in one sentence, it may be impossible. But if you write an essay about it, you can definitely do that. The point you need to remember here is that learning, understanding or explaining complex events and ideas cannot be done in a single sentence or in a single paragraph. This is where essays come in. Essay helps you learn, understand and explain complex things.
Why Do You Need to Learn to Write Essays?
Essay writing is one of the most important skills you can learn. It is an important tool of learning any subject and also sharing with other people what you already know. But there are other reasons why you need to learn essay writing.

Do not think that essay writing has to do only with learning English. It is not. The skills you learn in essay writing can also help you study other subjects better. When you can write better essays, you can also answers questions in other subjects better. As you move to higher classes, all subjects will require you to write essays. Without good essay writing skills, you will not be able to score good marks in English as well as in other subjects. But if you can write good essays, your score in all subjects will improve. Essay writing skills are essential in order for you to become a successful student at all levels.
