Bless the Beasts and Children by Glendon Swarthout was first published in 1970. The novel tells the story of several misfit boys who are sent by their wealthy parents to a summer camp. The boys happen to be emotionally disturbed.

The boys get united to stop a buffalo hunt. The novel describes several significant elements of American society in the late 1960s. The story covers 192 pages. Several of the themes transcend time and space.

In the late 1960a, it was the time of great social upheaval in America. The country was going through a transition period. When the novel was being written, the Vietnam War was on. In the preceding years several political assignations had taken place.

Several significant elements of popular culture appear throughout the novel. There are some important allusions to televisions programmes and to hippies. Through these allusions, the author tries to show that the boys were aware of the culture that surrounded them.

It was a highly successful book and left its impact on the minds of the readers.
