Evey Sellers’s heart thumped against her chest like a jackrabbit. This shouldn’t be happening. She had done everything right, and now it was all falling apart. It was a catastrophe. Wait, hold on. Maybe there was one last, desperate way to save everything.

She dug into her backpack for another look, and deep in one of the corners, under the chapstick and her journal and a permission slip that was long overdue, she found it. The History paper that had taken a whole weekend at the Cedar Falls library to research and three nights to write, was exactly where it should’ve been. Evey pulled it out and flipped through the pages to make sure everything was there.

Relieved that every thought she could muster on the Great Depression was accounted for, Evey threw her coat in her locker. Three quarters of her grade was riding on that paper, and Mrs. Pascal had set fourth period as the final deadline.

    Hey, watch it!

    Rude!

A wave pushed its way through the hallway, shoving people aside. Not even a couple of Cedar Falls Junior High’s toughest football players stood a chance against whoever was barreling down the corridor.

Slow down, pal, one of them said.

Evey’s grip on her locker door tightened. What if it wasn’t someone, but something? Had another mythological creature broken into the real world? Or another god like Hades? What if it was something Evey had never seen before? Her other hand balled into a fist as her eyes darted around for an escape route.

It wasn’t a god or mythological creature. Simon bulldozed through a group of cheerleaders, his face red, little flecks of foam forming around his mouth.

    He was mad. Really mad.

    What’s wrong with-

How come you didn’t tell me?!

    Tell you what?

Simon whipped out a magazine and shook it in Evey’s face. They’re making a Perry Watson movie! How come I didn’t already know that?!

Evey sighed. I guess I forgot. They were talking about it, and then my dad wasn’t going to do it, and then it came together all of a sudden. Sorry.

Sorry? I… I… Simon wanted to blow up, but he wasn't built for uncontrolled rage. The best he could muster was spiking the magazine on the floor.

Are you okay? Simon could be mental sometimes, but this was way over the top.

You can make it up to me, he said, his face returning to its normal pale white.

    How’s that?

Simon suddenly went shy. Do you think you could give me an audition, you know, for Perry?

A laugh formed in the back Evey’s mouth, and she had to force it into a cough before it came out. I don’t know how much-

    Please…

I don't know how much say my dad has, but I’ll see what I can do, Evey said. She was about to ask if he’d finished his paper when a blinding flash of pain stabbed her right behind the eye. The hallway spun for a moment as the first bell rang.

Cool, thanks, an oblivious Simon said before running off to home room.

Her head pounding, Evey staggered to the nearest bathroom. All that reading about Dust Bowls and breadlines had finally caught up to her. She stepped into one of the stalls and sat down, rubbing her temples. Once the bell rang for first period, she’d go to the nurse’s office and get an aspirin.

Almost on cue, the bell rang. She stood up, but an overwhelming light blinded Evey and-

When she opened her eyes, Evey
