About this ebook

Originally published in the early 1930s, this extremely scarce early work on poultry keeping is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. We are now republishing it, using the original text and photographs. Two hundred and thirty three pages deal with every aspect of poultry keeping from egg to table, and will prove invaluable to both the backyard beginner and the larger commercial enterprise. Twenty detailed chapters contain much expert advise on: The Beginner; Breeds and Strains; Houses and Appliances; Foods and Feeding; Hatching; Rearing; Backyard Poultry Keeping; Intensive Poultry Keeping; Winter Egg Production; Day Old Chicks; Ducks; Turkeys; Geese; Guinea Fowls; Diseases of Poultry; Vermin; Egg Preserving; Killing and Shaping; Plucking, Drawing, Trussing; Marketing; Accounts. Etc. The book is well illustrated with photos of breeds and equipment. This is a fascinating read for any poultry enthusiast, and contains much information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the early farming books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The Poultry Book - A Guide for Big or Small Poultry Keepers, Beginners and Farmers is as the title would lead you to believe a book all about poultry covering all aspects of raising, keeping and killing (excluding detailed meat processing).Written in the late 1940s in an England that was still under the World War 2 rationing & prices controls system it also provides not only a unique look into 1940s poultry keeping but also poultry keeping within limited means. A lot of books these days assume everything needed can be purchases whereas this book focuses on raising your birds with what you have & a limited ration if you're producing eggs for the community. The book covers the obvious chickens as well as geese, turkey & guinea fowl. Being written in the 1940s it does not contain any reference to West of England or Pilgrim Geese which had not at the time been formally established as a breed. It also contains handy information for the small scale farmer interested in breeding a better meat bird from his existing flock, interestingly crossing an Old English Game chicken with a Rhode Island Red (or White) apparently gives offspring which have a higher meat content than a Old English Game, with less offal than a Rhode Island Red/White. I intend to try this experiment out with my flock.Overall it is a book that is not only historically interesting but also contains useful practical knowledge and methods.
