THE latter part of July saw my breeding operations drawing to a close, with a few late nests. Two of my hens weaning chicks laid additional clutches but without cock birds, and a few more hens laid in their moulting flights. It's been a funny old year!
One hen continued where she left off last season and dutifully “tailed” her newly weaned chicks, saving me a job, just like she did last year. I hope it isn't in the DNA she has passed down the line. It's harmless, but it is something I prefer to do for myself when the time is right!
I am more than happy with the overall quality of my new birds, which this year contain more than 20 self greens. I
