Canaries Month by Month: August

AUGUST, in canary breeding rooms across the UK, is the month of feathers.

With breeding operations all but wrapped up for another year, the big clean-up has started. My own practice sees me making immediate choices regarding the adult birds, with two flights: first for the birds that will probably no longer form part of my ongoing breeding plans, and second, for those that will be retained. This enables me to maximise my choices while the performance of the individual birds are still fresh in my memory. Some of the “to go” birds may yet be retained, depending on the quality of the young birds as they emerge from their moult as the season progresses.

Like many other experienced breeders, I am regularly approached for stock in advance of the moult, but all enquirers receive the same reply:
