CANARIES

ALTHOUGH I considered May to be my Waterloo as far as producing canaries was concerned, June (thankfully) proved to be another story altogether and as the month ended, my chicks numbered into the mid-70s, with a few nests still to come. Another successful season overall, with plenty of choices looming regarding the future direction I will take my stud.

I never aim to produce a particular number of chicks, but I do consider that you need to produce enough birds to make a realistic selection moving forward. For me, the magic number is 40 chicks. Anything above that is a bonus. It means you will have sufficient numbers of both cocks and hens in
