Blood can make the strangest things happen. Especially when spilled in a sacred garden. Add in a witch, black rose and a restless spirit. The result is potent magic.

I won’t travel backward to explain everything about my origin. But I am the witch in this story. My name is Ruby Gladstone and I’m the seventh generation witch in my family.

Maybe all of that has something to do with what happened, but I doubt it. In that pivotal moment when the black rose thorn pierced my finger I wasn’t thinking about my family line or even about being a witch.

I was at the garden foraging newly emerged flower buds for a potion I wanted to try. Fresh buds are the best ingredient when you’re seeking new experiences to enhance your life.

The early summer day and warm sunshine had put me into a good mood.

Brilliant blossoms covered the climbing bush located in the churchyard. They tempted me with a promise of soft beauty.

I’ve always believed that stopping to smell the roses was an excellent way to induce a feel good magic. When the opportunity presents itself to indulge in this simple pleasure; it’s Mother Nature’s way of getting your attention.

Naturally, I paused and treated myself with fragrant indulgence.

The heady scent pulled my face closer and I took a deep breath. Rose magic is powerful and I was under its spell before I had a chance to exhale.

I sensed the magical charm immediately, but the bliss of scented rosiness made the experience euphoric. That’s why I did not panic.

Even as I stared at the crimson blood droplets on my fingertip and wondered vaguely how the skin had been pierced, the sensation of bodily change began its mystical process.

There was a flutter of wings, and then the world spun out of control as my physical body shifted into an unfamiliar form.

A feminine voice interrupted my confusion. I’ll give you your body back when the moon shifts into the next quarter phase.

Uncomfortable in my new skin, I shuddered and rippled the feathers along my wings. Since I’m a bird, I don’t understand. It’s lost within bewilderment and this body change.

That’s not my problem, she remarked. I’ve a mission and must see it through.

Who are you? A body snatcher? A bird’s eye view of my body frightened me with a reality check.

For now, I’m you, she answered with a cocky attitude. Her confidence seemed to grow with each passing second. But I don’t mind if you call me Becca since no one will hear you anyway. The confusion will ease as you get used to the transformation from human to raven.

    Why did you do this?

    Justice.

But I haven’t done anything to you. I don’t even know who you are.

"I am Preacher Benard’s ... or rather, was his daughter. I never thought about using a witch’s body as a vessel before. Then I saw you here in the garden one day and the idea clicked how I could solve my problem. You’d be perfect."

Becca shook her shoulders as though adjusting
