The Accident
Someone please call an ambulance, Call 108. He is bleeding badly, Call quickly
- the eyewitness became inaudible and I fainted. There are many people who could view an accident as a blessing but I had altogether a different experience. I was really good at driving but as someone said, every good turn becomes bad when fate goes against a person.
I was in unconscious state when I found myself lying in a hospital bed in ICU hooked up to all kinds of machines. My parents hastened to the hospital to see me. Just to open my eye I had to struggle. With partial opened eyes I saw mummy papa, standing beside me. They were highly tensed and saddened by my condition. They yelled at me in fear Manu, could you listen to us?
Meanwhile the doctor came with the report and said, "Multiple fractures are diagnosed due to extreme force collision in the accident. It includes ankle, femur, collarbone, neck as well as spinal cord. We have operated the neck fracture. No internal bleeding is seen. He will need at least 3 months to be back on track. He was brought at right time to the hospital or else things would have been worse. I need some more tests to be done. You can get it done in a week or so."
Papa: Thank you so much doctor.
Doctor: Well that’s my duty, I wish him get well soon, and do get those tests done and show me the reports.
Papa: Sure doctor.
I could listen to their conversation but wasn’t able to respond them. Hours after when I got up, I found mummy papa talking to each other. I mumbled slowly mummy papa. Seeing me giving response, they came closer to me and enquired me, how I was feeling? With hand movements I conveyed them that I was fine and asked for a glass of water.
Taking no time they fed me with water and asked where I was going in the car?
Me: I went to see Tanu, the administrator called and told me she wasn’t well and wanted to see me. While I was returning, my phone fell onto the floor. I tried to reach it and grab it but then I heard the break noise errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Till the time I could recognize what happened, the truck in front of me slammed my car, taking it out of the road. Within seconds my car was into flames. I got stuck between the seat and steering wheel. I couldn’t move. I was terrified. All I can do is wait, for someone to help me. The people who witnessed the disastrous accident showed the courage and brought me out of the car. Otherwise I would have been subject to an instant death. My skull was badly wounded and bleeding was severe. Someone yelled, please call the ambulance listening to which I fainted.
Sometimes misfortune comes without notice. We can never know what actually lies for us at a minute ahead. Well accident is accident and miracle is miracle. I thanked Ganpati bappa for saving me from this head on deadly collision. I was thinking, was it a mere coincidence or something planned by my destiny that this mishap occurred today.
I asked mummy papa to take rest and assured them that I was now fine. They said they will manage but I could easily see their expressions. They were not at all fine, but were highly tensed and shocked by my condition.
After 5 days, I went for the remaining test which doctor asked me for and before the reports came they relocated me into the general ward. Although I was in pain but I was happy as I survived in the fatal collision. Since I was shifted, there were inmates, friends and family at the hospital to see me and to know about my well beings. That evening, when mummy was feeding me the tasteless food, the doctor entered into the room, dead silence reined amongst we three.
He was having the reports of mine and he looked bit stern. I greeted him and questioned what was there in the report.
Doctor: things are not at all good. An x-ray showed he had broken his sternum but it also showed something unexpected- a shadow on his lungs.
Papa- furiously: What is that doctor?
Doctor: I thought I may be wrong but later when I consulted my colleague doctors, they told me that Manav has cancer in his right lungs.
No one is ever prepared to hear about their family member having a life threatening disease. We all 3 were shocked, it was unbelievable to us. Never expected such statement from doctor, in place of accepting this report as a fact, papa started arguing with the doctor stating that there may be a mistake in the lab, you must double check it.
Doctor: I have triple checked it I may be wrong as well. Just to clarify everything, he has to go for lung biopsy. I am sending him for the test right now and will make sure the reports come by the end of the day.
It was a shockwave for all of us as I had no symptoms. There was no weight loss, no cough, no shortness of breath and I used to go for long walks every day. In addition, I never smoked too. I was been taken for the test then with report we met the clinical oncologist. Papa submitted the reports to him. In couple of minutes he said, "I must say, brace yourself, you have to face much tough time from now on. Yes you are in 2nd stage of lung cancer."
In trembling voice Papa said, are your sure doctor? Is it curable?
Doctor: It is, but you will have to move to Hyderabad for the treatment as soon as possible. Manu will be the 1st patient to use True Beam Linear Accelerator technology. This will allow doctors to deliver radiotherapy with unparalleled speed and accuracy. I know you all are badly overwrought but don’t worry, trust us and have faith over god, rest we will do. You must take the decision of going to Hyderabad as quickly as possible. Every second is valuable for him. Stay tough.
Doctor said, "He is already in pain and there may be a case that the infection seen in the x-ray and other reports, may upsurge. I have forwarded all the details of him to the doctors in the Hyderabad. As soon as you will land up in Hyderabad, the ambulance will take you to the Reddy’s Multi-specialty hospital." Such things left us in adverse impact on family, roles, responsibilities, needs, future plans, whereas emotionally, financially, we were torn apart. My family entered into the same phase of life. This is where you cannot forecast even about next minute. Leaving everything at bappa’s mercy and doctor’s hand we decided to go with the flow.
Next morning, we reached Hyderabad via flight. The ambulance was waiting for us outside the airport, which directly took us to the Reddy’s multi-specialty hospital. Before leaving I was injected with morphine. When I opened my eyes I found myself in a different place. I saw mummy papa, they were sitting next to me.
I was seeing stress and panic in their eyes. I knew how they were feeling. Being the only son, I am the only one to take care of them but on the contrary there life became upside down. Taking those emotions into notice I wished "Ganpati bappa please take me out of this condition. I can’t handle it anymore. I don’t want to give any more trouble to my parents. Please god please. Save me, save us."
When I got up, papa went to the doctor, just to inform him about our arrival. It has been almost an hour he left. I even asked mummy that do you know anything about it. But she didn’t have any information regarding this. I asked her to make a call to papa. As she took the mobile, papa entered with the doctor in my private ward.
The doctor came to me and said, Hi I will be your doctor. I will be the one to treat you. It is a long and painful process I must tell you this. You have to be patient and determined for it. I am sure the pain will destabilize your confidence. But you have to bear it to live…….. to see the future. Once you are fit and fine, it will be the commencement of your new life.
I was terrified by listening to him, I could feel the intensity of the treatment but I can’t imagine how painful it can be. I asked Doctor, Will I be healed after this treatment?
I asked.
Doctor: At this moment all I can say is trust us and have faith on god. Let me tell you the process. There will be 3 sessions of Chemotherapy which will be bit daunting, later followed by 33 continuous days of radiotherapy. This signifies how long the process will go. But have patience. I know it’s a cliché, but what will get you out of this life will depend on what you put onto it. I and my staff are here to help you in every way. If there is anything I can help you with, don’t hesitate to call. We will begin the treatment in next 4 days. Till the time take rest.
His words made me distressed. Mummy and papa both were distraught too, but they weren’t showing it to me. After the doctor left, I made mummy papa go to canteen for dinner. Seeing them in such condition I was feeling guilty. I asked nurse to switch on the TV and give me the remote. I rolled down some channels, majority of them were in Telugu and other regional languages. I can neither understand nor speak any of them. Those Telugu channels reminded me of Payal. Payal Mishra.
Oh yes how I can forget, Payal is a resident of Hyderabad. I must call her up but where is my mobile phone? Last time I remember it was with me while I was driving. Post-accident I have no idea. I have to wait till mummy papa comes back. They might have the information regarding this. Payal is a close friend of mine, met on Orkut in the year 2007 and since then we are good friends. She was a key to all my mysteries. I had some more connections with Hyderabad. Someone else was there in Hyderabad, who would not love to know about me and my well beings.
I saw mummy papa entering the room. Taking no time I asked them, where is my mobile phone? Papa said,
"your phone screen and body got cracked. I have brought a spare phone with your sim card too."
Without contacts the phone was nothing but a dummy to me. Ultimately I had to access Facebook to get in touch with others. This is where I informed Payal about my presence in Hyderabad and asked her to come and meet me if possible.
The next morning was quite dull due to hangover of tablets. With my partially open eyes I saw, there was a girl standing beside me with a beautiful bouquet in hand. Recognizing her was not tough for me. There she was Payal and we were no longer just
