It was a warm day in May of 1985 when my sister, Wendy and I were getting ready to go to the community pool and meet some friends. It was a short walk to get there and I noticed the pool was crystal blue, like those ocean picture in exotic places that you see in magazines.
Shelly and Jen were already there, they were both older than me by a couple years and had a couple boys with them. I noticed right away that one of the boys was very cute with sandy brown hair, green eyes and a nice tan, he introduced himself to us as Dale.
We all just hung out around the pool swimming and having a good time for what seemed like hours before Wendy and Shelly headed back for our house. The rest of us stayed at the pool until it started getting late. I did not want to leave since I was have a good time with Dale but finally we exchanged phone numbers and said goodnight.
I thought about him pretty much all night. I was thinking what does a guy like that see in a girl like me. He was 19 years old and I was 14. He was very cute and seemed really nice. He was only visiting his family in Seattle for a month and then he was heading back home to Alaska. I was leaving soon to go to visit my sister in California for the summer but I really wanted him to call me even though I knew that nothing long term would come out of it.
At 14 I had not really had a boyfriend and was just getting to the point where I was interested in boys. My parents spent most of their time either at work or one of the local bars in town. They were not bad parents they were just not around a lot so we had a lot of freedom. I had not been in trouble at all but never really had any guidelines to when and where to be.
The following day Dale called me and we met up again and just hung out. We spent a lot of time together over the next several weeks just hanging out together. Every time I saw him he always had on this brown leather jacket that gave him kind of a rebel appeal to him. Once night I was staying at a friend’s house for the night and he came over to spend more time with me before we both left to go our own ways.
We ended up staying the entire night together although I had never been with a boy before and did not know anything except it was exactly where I wanted to be at the time. I knew that this was probably the last time we would have to spend together and I did not want it to end.
Soon after that I was on my way to California to spend the remainder of the summer with my older sister, Toni. I did not know her that well since she moved out when I was younger. Toni is 5 years older than me and she had been married since she was 15 years old. She lived in a little apartment with
