    Sarah's Adventure

    (Written 1986-2002, edited 2004 and 2005)

    CHAPTER 1

Sarah sat at her desk reading a book about sardines. It wasn't her personal choice in literature but she was required to read it for school. She was struggling through the first chapter. She looked at the clock. It was two minutes after she had last looked at it.

Her cat, Watson, came in the room, jumped up on the desk and, seeing a piece of homework that she had to hand in the next day, curled up and went to sleep on it. Sarah sighed and decided to go visit her friend Helena instead of studying.

In the garden she ran into her younger sister, who was holding a letter.

Guess what? Kylie said excitedly. Uncle Warwick's coming to visit next week.

Judging by the spidery handwriting that Sarah couldn't read, it was her uncle Warwick Gunder. She didn't like him, partly because of his name but mainly because he was a suspicious person who claimed to work for 'the government' but never told anyone exactly what he did.

Isn't it exciting? Kylie asked. She evidently liked him.

Oh, sure, Sarah said, and hurried away so she wouldn't have to talk about him.

It was only a few blocks to Helena's house and at the door she was greeted by Helena's noisy black dog Richie who ran around her in circles barking madly.

Shut up, she ordered him. He barked even louder.

Is that you, Sarah? Helena called. She came out of her room and saw that it was. Sit, Richie. If you're good I'll take you for a walk later.

He immediately sat motionless in the middle of the hallway and Sarah crept past him. They went into Helena’s room and closed the door to keep him out. Sarah sat down on Helena’s old bed, which creaked in protest.

You'll have to take him for a walk now. Or, he'll take you for one.

At least we’re safe for a while. Are you going to the fete?

    What fete?

There's one on somewhere. My father said something about it.

I see. There's a fete on, somewhere. Well, if I find out where I'll go to it, all right?

OK, Helena agreed. Richie scratched at the door. She ignored him.

I should show you the note I got yesterday. Someone left it in our letterbox. It's very strange.

She dived into one of the drawers of her large, messy desk and exited, along with a pile of papers and newspaper articles, with a piece of blue paper. She handed it to Sarah. It was typewritten. It said: 'My dear, I visited Mrs Stetson the other day and she told me all about you. I think that you should bring your friends to the airport on Monday and we can meet at the arranged place two hours before the plane leaves. The password is Manokwari. Make sure you are there. Marcus.'

Very interesting, said Sarah. Do you know a Mrs Stetson or a Marcus?

No. It doesn't make any sense at all.

I guess it isn't really for you then. Someone must have made a mistake.

I've been trying to find out what it's about. Maybe we could go to the airport tomorrow and see what happens.

Oh, great idea. There would be a million airplanes and two million people.

We could walk around saying that mysterious password, Helena suggested brilliantly.

You can do that. Everyone would think we were idiots.

The phone rang somewhere in the house
